CA. Poppies, Hwy 140 and the Merced River by Shirley Ward, FPSA, EPSA

April 2021 - CA. Poppies, Hwy 140 and the Merced River

About the Image(s)

A friend and I drove up 140 thru Mariposa and down to the Merced River Canyon to shoot the "hillsides glowing with the brilliant orange" of the CA. Poppies. These scenes were taken last week from the highway looking up or over to the hillsides on both sides of the river. 140 ends in Yosemite. It's difficult to get any closeups unless one has a 400 or 500 mm lens as they are high up on the hillsides...The poppies will last another 2 weeks or so, as they are at their peak right now...

This scene shows the highway, hillside of poppies and just to the left is a bit of the Merced River. A bush of Red Bud is also at the lower left of the scene.

The scene colors work nicely together. Your angle really makes the steepness of the hillside stand out. Overall, the items in this composition make for a wall hanging image.   Posted: 04/05/2021 21:57:21

Great capture - great colors. I might sharpen it more. Also crop off a little at the bottom to get rid of the side road.   Posted: 04/13/2021 15:16:38

Good color and good leading line. Good vertical lines also. I wish that little area in front right (road pull off area?) wasn't there. I find it a little distracting. Great shot and beautiful area. Hopefully you got close ups of some of the poppies.   Posted: 04/13/2021 20:07:18

No, I wasn't able to get any closeups of the poppies along the Merced River, as they are far up on the hillsides and not close to the road. However, I did get many closeups of the poppies, etc. on another trip up east of Fresno at Pine Flat on Trimmer Road. But, that's another story....maybe next month...   Posted: 04/13/2021 20:17:07
