Pomegranates and leaves by Shirley Ward, FPSA, EPSA

November 2020 - Pomegranates and leaves

About the Image(s)

Photographing fruits and veggies is one of my very favorite things to do...A friend gave me a bag of these delicious Pomegranates... So, I just had to take some photos of them...I used some fake fall leaves for contrast and interest. By cutting 2 of them open to expose the seeds inside more impact was given. These were taken with my Panasonic Point and Shoot camera with the arrangement on a black towel on top of my washer in my patio with available light in the afternoon.....

Great impact. The mixture of red, green and yellow tones play well in the black background. Love the red frame. Great job.   Posted: 11/07/2020 12:00:09

I have little experience with this type of subject. The image is sharp, lighting is very good, colors are mixed nicely. Good job.   Posted: 11/08/2020 19:03:47

Great photo. Looks like a painting. Colors are sharp and so is the image. All items are well placed. And the black towel was perfect for the image. Also well framed.   Posted: 11/09/2020 18:17:44

The reds are very vivid! The image has great composition. The ideas are cleanly expressed. The only thing I would like to suggest is perhaps take down the white to get more definition of the seeds. Overall, great photo!   Posted: 11/11/2020 17:01:22

I did tone down the white strips, but, white is very hard to darken....   Posted: 11/11/2020 17:25:06

White is the hardest for me also. Do you use Photoshop? I wish I could copy your photo to work on it but I don't know how! It won't let me copy and paste. I'm not sure where you are (usa or?) as maybe if it's allowed do a zoom or something together? If you want to email it to me, my email is mikecyn56@gmail.com. Anyway I still love the photo!!   Posted: 11/13/2020 19:27:32

Hi Shirley!

So I tried to bring down the whites a little and bring up the seeds. That was pretty hard and I think I like your version better! Hope you enjoy!

Cynthia, what tools did you use in ps to do it.   Posted: 11/20/2020 12:35:44

I use several tools. I mostly dodged and burned. I enlarged the photo almost to the pixels and then outlined (burned) almost each seed(?). I then burned down just a little the whites....do you like it?   Posted: 11/20/2020 14:24:42

Shirley You do great still lifes. Your work is awesome. Cynthia's edits did help a bit in toning down the white. Definitly a christmas theme.   Posted: 11/21/2020 23:52:15

I worked at our local food bank for almost 14 years until my health prevented me from doing all that lifting and bending. I was fortunate to also work for their SNAPP (Senior Nutrition and Produce Program) for all of those years too. This gave me the opportunity to see and take photos of many veggies and fruits that were distorted, blemished, etc. I have over 300+ photos that were put into photo shop and done for set ups. I also have put the best ones into 2 photo books to be given away as gifts someday. Several have been shown in the past in this group.   Posted: 11/22/2020 17:35:22

A super still life. You obviously have a good idea for arrangements. When I try it just looks like a heap!   Posted: 11/30/2020 14:25:01
