Bodie Lighthouse by Dave Edwards

June 2018 - Bodie Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

Tours through the Bodie Lighthouse located on the Outer Banks, North Carolina limit the amount of time available for photographs. I lagged behind the group and managed to capture this image looking up. Tripods were not allowed so I rested the camera on the railing and increased the ISO to reduce camera movement. Repaired peeling paint with PS CS5. Didn't send a bill for the repairs :-) Technical: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 17-40mm f/4 L series lens, 1/20, f/4 (widest aperture for this lens), ISO 1600, Focal Length 17mm.

To me, this is more about the eyeball in the centre of the picture. In fact, the more you look at it, you see a face, with a yawning mouth, two beady eyes and a helmet above. One to keep for the records.   Posted: 06/04/2018 14:39:47

I should have added that the position of the slightly out-of-focus stairway, for me, serves as an eyebrow.   Posted: 06/05/2018 13:00:55

Richard, could it be the lighthouse is haunted? :-)   Posted: 06/08/2018 07:15:06

Admire anyone that can do Lighthouse stairs! And I knew instantly what your subject was! Great shot! Interesting that you should post this. I just returned from Nantucket and Great Point Light was a stop we made. They allowed us to go up to the top, BUT the last leg was up a ladder (not stairs) and I am fearful of heights. So I elected to stay below and shoot the stairs. It is VERY difficult to get the angle right ( I think it took me 40 shots to get something that did not yell at me "delete") . I even went and got my wide angle and still very hard. Appreciate the skill that went into taking this shot.   Posted: 06/07/2018 16:20:07

Thanks Sherry, Some lighthouses have very tight spaces making it very difficult to capture a good image. The Bodie Lighthouse was a bit wider and the tour groups were small enough to provide this opportunity. This image was taken on the way down and I was the last person, of course.   Posted: 06/08/2018 07:22:54

I did not pick up that this was looking downward! It looks like an entirely different picture knowing it is looking down, not up! Amazing , knowing the correct perspective provides a whole new appreciation!!

I also thought it was taken from below. Now that I know it taken on the way down, I can see the image differently as did Sherry. Good paint job. The contrast of the steps against the gray brick enhances the photo. Great perspective shot. Well done.   Posted: 06/15/2018 17:37:48
