About the Image(s)

USTA Men's Future Tennis at Palm Coast FL. Over two weeks of competition, 128 Qualifying for the Main Draw. I photographed over 4-8 hours each day, over 24,500 images taken. This image of Collin Johns is typical if images taken. this image was taken at 1/2000 F8 ISO 1600. Goal to capture moment ball hits racket. I liked this one as it captures action, expression and the back lighting also captures the dust from ball impact on racket. Collin made the quarterfinals. The Singles winner was Tim VAN RUTHOVAN of the Netherland )as seen in the image labelled "Original"

The first two days I tried to stay with all manual settings. because there was ten courts and many different lighting angles and time of day etc I could not keep the speed setting above 500. so I captured more motion that I wanted to. I was looking for the right mix of motion blur on the racket and ball. I did capture a few but more by luck that skill.

I returned to my comfort setting of Aperture mode with a high ISO over 600 which kept my speed in the 500 and higher range.

Nice job! You even captured the clay spraying off the racquet . I have started to capture my Granddaughters in their soccer matches, and getting just the right moment is challenging! You have captured the facial expressions, in air, and pretty darn close to when the ball came off the racquet. Well done.   Posted: 02/13/2018 11:15:27

Good effort in stopping some very fast motion. I imagine you have many images that include the net. I wonder how adding more tennis court components would effect the overall composition.   Posted: 02/13/2018 18:15:59

Great job. You did an amazing job of capturing the ball hitting the racket, the action, his expression, and also the dust from the ball. His shadow also adds to the photo. I would have cropped the top portion above the fence and a small portion off the bottom. the original shown is from a different photo.   Posted: 02/14/2018 09:05:48

Good job with a very difficult subject. I have never been able to get these photos...as sports photography is not my thing, but obviously it is yours, and I commend you for being able to capture such action shots...well done...   Posted: 02/14/2018 23:53:11

As others have said, everything is so sharp, and even the dust is recorded. One thing that shows up in young men today, is the scruffy nature of their style. Even though the action is captured, so is the scruffy nature of the hair!   Posted: 02/15/2018 11:21:03

I should have added - By comparison, the hair of the other boy also in action, is still smart.   Posted: 02/18/2018 04:19:58

Both images are well-done - sharp, conveying action and without distracting elements. The ball and the dust gives a sense of action and movement. Great image. How many did you have to take to get good shots. Motor Drive needed here!   Posted: 02/28/2018 09:24:49

no motor drive. I tried to capture in manual mode but didn't work. tried S mode also difficult. I use A 5.6 to 8 mode and keep my Speed above 500. ISO 400 or up. I've been using the AEL back focus and most every shot is in focus. there are ten courts so the lighting changes as does the direction. Sometimes I have to wait for the players to switch sides. too much shade or sun. I take about 30-50 shots of each player and get at least 20 or more good shots. Some players are very active and it is easy to get caught up snapping 100 shots.   Posted: 02/28/2018 10:39:57
