About the Image(s)

This photo in the original is very dark. It was a cloudy dark day for a swamp tour and eventually it rained. I didn't think there was much that could be done with this image, but I brightened it up a lot in Lightroom and then took in into Nik. The filter that seemed to give the image the most life was the Detail Extractor. so that is the dominant effect. By exaggerating the texture of the Spanish moss, it took on a ghostly quality. I also used the Lightroom brush tool, set for contrast and clarity, to bring out the reflections in the foreground.

Lovely result Peggy. I love the feeling this creates and the contrast of the green grass. I want to keep on looking and looking. However, did you take any reflections? It appears that you had beautiful reflections.   Posted: 02/06/2021 11:02:46

Peggy -- nice capture and an interesting scene. However, in brightening the lower part of the picture you caused the upper part, and in particular the sky in the background to become overexposed. You can correct this by using a graduated filter in either photoshop or camera raw. This would bring the top back to correct exposure and leave the bottom as it is. To follow up on Joe's point, another approach would have been to lower the camera (bracketing the shots) and get more of the reflections, which might have added more interest. Of course, I don't know what the situation was like where you were doing the shooting, but it seems there may have been some room to capture more of the water and reflections.   Posted: 02/07/2021 08:55:02

This was taken from a small boat on a guided swamp tour. You kind of have to capture what you can as you pass through. I agree about a graduated filter. I will try that.   Posted: 02/09/2021 14:12:17

I just love this image as is. It's like a magical kingdom. I've seen lots of photos of swamps but this one is extra special. I wouldn't change a thing.   Posted: 02/11/2021 07:15:13

I like both versions. The original has a sort of moodiness for me while the final has the details in the trunks and water which shows off the reflection well. Perhaps a little darker on the tree branches? Nice image - especially from a boat.   Posted: 02/11/2021 21:48:30

What a fun photo. The background does appear to be washed out. This image is ideal for luminosity masks to give more control to the varying levels of brightness. A gradient filter may work or perhaps brushing in a little contrast/clarity through the branches will do the trick.   Posted: 02/15/2021 08:33:32
