About the Image(s)

Hangin On Till Sundown is an abandoned barn I captured east of Denver. I shot this with my Canon 5D Mark III, Canon EF 100-400, tripod, with shutter release. ISO 500, 153mm, f/16, 1/200 sec.

I completed basic edits in LR then fine tuned in PS. I cleaned up wires and a light pole, then applied a curves adjustment layer, added a Hue/Sat layer to brighten the roof, selected the Sky Replacement feature in Photoshop, which works amazingly well!!! Then used a luminosity mask to make a selection of areas to apply a golden light to the grain silo and grass, sharpened and flattened.

Great job on the sky replacement -- much better than in the original. One minor point -- there seems to be a slight ghostly lightness hugging the left side of the barn, beginning where the roof intersects the silo and moving along to the ground. The green foreground is vivid and beautifully done, and gives a solid anchor for the structure. The silo appears ever so slightly out of vertical, but perhaps this was the way it actually was. I even like the way the weather vane seems to be pointing to the barn .. I like this very much!   Posted: 02/05/2021 15:42:45

Kaylyn, you sure have a way with scenics. I love the colors, texture and aging of the barn. Unfortunately, it appears too centered and boxed-in. You could have used more foreground or even better, more sky. Cropping up to the weather vane, should help a bit.   Posted: 02/06/2021 11:46:48

Love Sky Replacement! I sort of feel the lighting isn't quite right for the sky and the image appears too light for the time of day. I gave it a try with the same sky and did some cropping to move the silo off center and also removed some of the grass. It is a nice image though. Love barns.   Posted: 02/06/2021 15:57:36

Kaylyn, did you try experimenting with conversion to black and white? There could also be some dramatic results there.   Posted: 02/07/2021 09:10:06

The Photoshop sky replacements are so easy - and the one you have chosen works really well I think. I agree with Marti that the lighting is not quite right, but darkening the foreground and barn was very helpful. I like the warm tones that you applied to the silo and grass. Nice job!   Posted: 02/09/2021 13:49:20

I'm the odd one out but I like the original sky! I do think you did a great job of post-processing to bring out more of the colors on the barn. I also agree with Jerry that this would have worked well in black and white, especially with the nice puffy white clouds in the original shot.   Posted: 02/11/2021 07:20:08

Great and varied perspectives! I'll try the black & white to see the affect.   Posted: 02/15/2021 09:00:04
