About the Image(s)

This image is of The Commons, a former state mental hospital that has been repurposed into senior residences, shops, and restaurants. I made basic adjustments in Lightroom and then moved the image into Topaz Studio 2. I added one of the "Looks", which is a preset, and reduced the opacity. Then I layered on two other textures. For each texture, I set the blend mode to Soft Light and reduced the opacity. Then I added a vignette and finally a stroke. This image was taken in the early evening and I think my textures help convey that mood.

You did an admirable job of improving your original capture. Not only did you brighten the building, you also added some texture and brought out the colors. In short, you took a rather drab looking image and turned it into something that is quite enjoyable to look at.   Posted: 09/08/2020 09:50:29

Nice recovery. The colors are muted in a pleasant manner as to convey a late afternoon setting, as you alluded to. Some might have been tempted to over- saturate the picture, so you did well to go on the conservative side. You did well as far as 'plumbing' the building and the turrets. I think perhaps the framing of the hospital by the trees could be reduced a bit by cropping in from the left just enough so that the left side is not quite so visually dominant.   Posted: 09/09/2020 08:47:21

I really like your enhancements of this image. I think topaz is so full of great tools and you have applied them very well. Your sky is excellent as well as the building Surface. My only recommendation would be to crop off just a bit of the foliage on the left to focus more on the building. I think your contrast and color is great. Nice job   Posted: 09/09/2020 11:32:47

I like the improvements for the building. I'm not sure I like the texture in the sky as it looks kind of "dirty". I'm going to disagree with Al about the left side as I feel the two main towers are placed in "power spots" and to crop fro the left might take away from that. You did a great job on the conversion of the original though.   Posted: 09/15/2020 22:29:32

I know what you mean about the texture in the sky. I think it works as an overall effect, but if you focus on it too much, it does appear kind of dirty.
You are right that recropping would upset the balance of the towers. The largest is right on the 1/3 line, and I would lose that by bringing in the left side. Maybe the fact that the left side vignette is darker is really more the issue.   Posted: 09/17/2020 11:59:32
