About the Image(s)

I captured this image in early June during a trip to the San Juan Islands off the northwest coast of Washington State. The barn sat on the edge of a lovely green field the first time I saw this. However, the light was not right, so I waited until another day. The “another day” was rain until late afternoon when the clouds started to clear and the rain stopped. I drove back to this spot and captured the steam rising through the trees and a soft backlight illuminated the barn. I did a little cropping and had to work on the very bright sky. Shot with a Canon 7D and 135mm lens, f/9, ISO800 at 1/800 second.

This one has a nice peaceful feel to it. Good job.   Posted: 06/09/2018 13:39:14

As Marti says, your picture has a nice tranquil and pastoral mood. The foreground grass, the barn and surrounding areas, and the sky makes for a good rule of thirds element. In my opinion the bright sky, relative to the rest of the image, is too distracting in that the eye is usually drawn first to the lightest and brightest parts whereas in this image the focus of the composition should be the barn area. I like the gradation of tones from the middled part up to the sky. I wonder if the pic as a whole should have more contrast.   Posted: 06/10/2018 07:41:54

I agree with Marti and Jerry's comments - peaceful, tranquil scene. The backlighting adds a nice element. I'd crop out a little more of the sky because of the brightness, but you don't want to lose those beautiful trees. Good capture. Adding a slight white vignette would focus the eye on the barn and also would help to blend the white sky.   Posted: 06/10/2018 13:22:39

Mike this is a beautiful mood picture and what really made is that you waited for the right light. I agree with what was said and cropping, as Peggy suggests, helps, but if you can select the sky successfully (perhaps Jerry can help) and tone it down a bit, it would help greatly. Also, it may not be leaning to the right, but it appears that it does, at least to me, so it can use a little tilt to the left.

I'm visiting from group 62 and saw this beautiful picture. The barn's environment is wonderful and, as others have said, very peaceful. I tried making the barn a bit brighter to see if that would improve (or degrade) your image. Here's my attempt. Your thoughts?   Posted: 06/20/2018 17:54:19

Excellent! Thank you so much for your comments. I like how you brightened the shot. Although my original is a true representation for how it looked in the dim light, I do think you enhanced the image by opening up the areas. Again, thank you! (And thanks for dropping in on Group 22. Always nice to get perspectives from other members.)   Posted: 06/20/2018 18:21:17

Mike, your original shot was excellent. However, when I decided that the barn was the primary point of interest, I noticed that it didn't immediately attract my attention. Thus, a bit of light manipulation....

I'm glad you like my edits. I noticed on one of your previous pictures that you used the Canon 100-400mm lens. That's one of my favorite lenses... and the 135mm is another favorite.

Please visit Group 62 and share your input when you get a chance.   Posted: 06/20/2018 18:38:25
