About the Image(s)

This is a photo of one of our cats, who has unfortunately died. She was a really beautiful creature. I decided to try a new technique that I had read about from Matt Kloskowski (check out his website), in which he uses a textured or blurred background to mesh with the original photo. In this case I made my own background by heavily blurring a landscape photo. I placed the background over the cat and tried out different blend modes. I liked the one which I think was pin light. I then cleaned up the face, reducing the effect of the overlay using a low opacity of the eraser tool. Some other clone work went into this as part of the cleanup. Finally, I changed the eye color. First it was too blue, then I recolored it using more of a yellow color. I liked the final color outcome where the ruff remained very colorful.

Joan, Your cat is a beautiful lady. I quite like the notion of your cat having a coloured muff around its neck to keep it warm and the way that the mottled yellow enhances that illusion. Changing the eye colour adds a sense of mystery and intrigue.   Posted: 05/10/2020 07:48:44

I have used a similar technique, using water patterns over our white cat! I once used a sunset over a rock cliff and it totally transformed that cliff with light!
I like what you have done...its sort of honoring the memory of your cat while transforming her into a new state of existence. I LOVE her eyes...though not too sure about the colour over her fur collar!   Posted: 05/12/2020 20:18:40

Years ago, I took pictures of my cat Avalon using projected slides as the light source, with a similar result. I left the focus of the slides to chance so some parts were more sharp than others, and used a focusing Mag-light to accent her face. I love the colors and luminance of your final image. Mine were more contrasty.   Posted: 05/17/2020 12:21:23
