Bird in Tree by Joan Field, FPSA

December 2019 - Bird in Tree

About the Image(s)

I used two layers: One was of a cropped in set of branches with many leaves on a local sycamore tree. The other was a cedar waxwing who was busily attacking the berries in our backyard. Both were treated with Topaz Glow 2 to produce the amount of extra lines and colors that I liked. Finally I put a dark vignette around it all.
Maybe I should have called it a Peasant in a pear tree for Christmas.

The colours are beautifully delicate. The lines really suit the tree and I like the way the bird stands out, looking very confident. I also like that the bird doesn't have too many lines over him   Posted: 12/02/2019 22:19:55

Joan, This is a lovely image that is full of vibrant saturated colours. I am a fan of the Fractalius filter which creates a similar effect to Topaz Glow 2. I particularly like the way that the waxwing is not affected by the filter and seems to be perched above and outside the effect. Compositionally, the bird is perfectly placed on the third and looking into the picture. Well done.   Posted: 12/13/2019 13:53:30

The bird was in a separate layer and I used the same Topaz filter on it; it came out like that, which I liked, so kept it.   Posted: 12/28/2019 13:48:21

Excellent composition and color. It's almost evocative of stained glass, while also suggesting batik fabric. I might have used a directional lighting effect in place of the vignette, to suggest sunlight and soften the bird a little.   Posted: 12/17/2019 14:45:02

Steve,
I'm not sure how to do that. I could try PS lighting effects to see what it does. Thanks for the advise.   Posted: 12/28/2019 13:22:05
