Winter Storm by Norm Solomon

February 2021 - Winter Storm

About the Image(s)

Nikon Z6 24-200@69mm 1/100 F11 ISO 640 processed in PS & Nik Silver Efex

This is an image I took during the Feb.1st snowstorm that swept the NorthEast US . I wanted to get an image while the storm was taking place. Fortunately my home has a view of the nearby Old Far Mill River. Since however the ground level view wasn’t satisfactory I brought our 7 foot ladder to the highest point of our home (staying inside of course!) and shot from there.I used manual focus so that the autofocus system was not `confused’ by the falling snow flakes. Any comments/suggestions are welcome!

Hi Norm,
I like it. The evergreen in the foreground leads my eye in towards the river. The trees add interest and texture against the white snow. Its a perfect black and white image. Perhaps you could remove the bush on the left side to clean up the edges of the frame. I know it was a snowstorm but the image imparts peacefulness to me. Nice.   Posted: 02/09/2021 16:49:12

I like the starkness of winter trees in snowstorms. This comes across well, and all credit for your effort in trying to capture the storm. Those bushes nicely fill what could have been a blank area.   Posted: 02/13/2021 06:55:32

Winter images are difficult but you've done a great job. I'm sure you did this but as a general comment snow requires a slight overexposure to avoid a dull image. You did great with the manual focus.   Posted: 02/14/2021 05:54:14

I think the image is great - it looks like you have the entire tonal range. The evergreen trees in the foreground might make an interesting study.   Posted: 02/16/2021 06:30:57

Your views surrounding your residence are simply beautiful. I like the angle you chose to photograph this scene. The evergreen trees on the left balance the picture. You could follow Barbara's suggestion to remove the small bush on the left side to clean up the edge of the frame. However, I think the picture is beautiful and I would be proud to hang it on my wall.

That ladder provided the viewpoint that you saw into the valley capturing it all. Good plan. Shooting through the window kept you warm and didn't seem to hurt the image. I like the combination of the trees that are just adorned with twigs, the snow blanket and the evergreen trees. The river provides a nice soft curving line through the image. Well done.   Posted: 02/19/2021 19:15:06
