Patterns and buttons by John Hackett

August 2020 - Patterns and buttons

About the Image(s)

I noticed that for a short period each day an interesting pattern was cast on the wall and sill by a window. This was caused by the patterned glass. I put some coloured buttons in a shaped bottle and tried to take a picture. I used my compact Nikon to take the picture as I had to lean across a sink to position the camera and rotate the screen to see what I got. Framing could be better I know.

Hi John,
I think this is a terrific attempt on a difficult subject-it is very creative!. I like the play of light on the background The wavy-ness of the patterned glass however can make it difficult to get everything in sharp focus.
A few thoughts for the future: 1. perhaps try `focus stacking'-to enhance sharpness; 2.perhaps lay the jar horizontally so the buttons are spread more evenly on the bottom of the jar.3.or simply focus on the shadows cast by the jar & move the jar itself out of the might make for an interesting black & white image!   Posted: 08/08/2020 13:20:22

John, a very pleasing and interesting image of the play of light; one troublesome thing for me is that the bottle does not have enough room at the top. Maybe you could extend the background a bit.   Posted: 08/12/2020 10:52:04

John, it is interesting to hear how you envisioned this image just noticing the patterns on the wall. Another example of your creative compositions. A very satisfying composition. I agree with Harriet however, I would like to see a little more space at the top.   Posted: 08/12/2020 15:57:59
