Incoming Rain by John Hackett

June 2020 - Incoming Rain

About the Image(s)

Another one from our trip around the coast of Ireland. A bit of the wet stuff heading towards land from the Atlantic. Converted to monochrome, and contrast adjusted. Nikon D7100, 18-105 lens at 35mm, f11, 1/400s, ISO 200

A great cloud with rain under it well placed to the left in the frame. I think I would try to get more drama in the sky in the mono conversion. You probably know, I like dark skies. To me the sky is the center of interest of the image, and you might want to emphasis it by cropping to move the horizon line down near the 1/3 line.   Posted: 06/09/2020 22:00:59

Hi John,
The image certainly has impact!
I agree with Stan that it could be strengthened by darkening the sky & cropping up on the water.I might also try cropping down on the whitest of the looks like the highlights may be `blown out' there.

John, you do great with monochromes. This one is fine but Stan and Norm are probably right about the Ansel Adams type Dark Sky's (he often used filters in his work). I like your treatment with rain cloud on the left and on the right waves balancing the cloud.   Posted: 06/14/2020 06:38:28

This should be a reply to the three of you. I agree looking at the image about cropping some of the base, after all the subject is the cloud with is rain, but I am not too sure about darkening the sky although I do understand what you are saying.   Posted: 06/14/2020 08:38:52

The more I look at your image, the more I wish the incoming rain would be a little darker. I know the image is about the incoming rain, but what I saw first was the vastness and solitude of this place. In my opinion, cropping from the bottom might direct my eyes to the incoming rain underneath your imposing cloud, but would decrease the feeling your picture imparts. I like it the way it is.   Posted: 06/15/2020 11:12:58
