Coyote in Yellowstone by Norm Solomon

January 2020 - Coyote in Yellowstone

About the Image(s)

Nikon D850 200-500,500mm @ F8, 1/1250, ISO 12000 (yes, really!)

I originally took this image in color but converted it to B&W in Lightroom & Photoshop. I used Topaz Denoise as well to help with the high ISO.
The starkness of the environment the Coyote has to deal with stood out to me and that is part of what I’m trying to convey in the image. And it was also one of those shots where trudging through several feet of snow to get closer probably would have cost me getting the imageā€”the Coyote was there & then goneā€¦

Firstly the idea of converting to mono was a good one. then the composition in the circumstances is excellent and shows the environment well. Well done.   Posted: 01/12/2020 06:58:18

The thought of having to get rid of digital noise keeps me from moving my ISO much higher than 1600. I have missed taking many a picture because of this fear. I applaud you for pushing it up there to get your picture and also for getting rid of the noise. The starkness you refer to came across and I think the mono treatment emphasizes this coyote on a mission better than color. Good job.   Posted: 01/12/2020 15:48:28

I like the lonesome "wolf" quality of this image. Maybe increasing the darks would make the image more dramatic and sleuthful.   Posted: 01/18/2020 10:26:42

You perhaps removed the detail in the surroundings of the coyote to get rid of noise, but if this is not a nature image, the result was a rather high key very attractive image.   Posted: 01/29/2020 22:42:57

Thanks all for your very helpful comments! Photographing wildlife is a challenge for me & I don't do it often. I was just lucky to get the shot. I'm fortunate that the Nikon D850 in combination with Topaz NR reduction can produce good images.   Posted: 01/30/2020 05:07:07
