Holding the boat high. by John Hackett

January 2020 - Holding the boat high.

About the Image(s)

This was taken in Ireland it is part of a memorial in a small town to those lost at sea. The sky was very blue and I felt mono suited the image. A bit of tone adjustment and that is all.

Hi John,

A wonderful image...the black & white treatment works well!

...Some thoughts...Do you think cropping up on the boat holder and leaving a bit more room to the right of the bow would be an enhancement?

Hi John,
The monochrome works terrifically here. I don't think you'd be able to pull off the same drama with a bright blue background.
I like the light to dark / bottom to top gradient supplied by the sky and the shadow on the face of the first-in-line to hold the boat.

I like the angle you used to photograph this image, presenting the arms on the left to balance the bow on the right. In my opinion the strength and beauty of the image is the simplicity which is enhanced by the monochrome treatment. Great image.   Posted: 01/12/2020 18:08:16

Very simple striking image - I do agree with Norm maybe a little room to the right of the image could be an enhancement.   Posted: 01/18/2020 11:21:03

A very compelling image. Unique with an interesting repetition of the statues supporting the boat. The angle you picked to take the shot was very supportive for enjoying the repetition. I think this image is very good just as it is.   Posted: 01/29/2020 23:37:55
