Grand Manan Island at Dusk-Shoreline View by Norm Solomon

August 2019 - Grand Manan Island at Dusk-Shoreline View

About the Image(s)

Nikon D850 F11 1/60 ISO 64 Nikon 24-120 @28mm-a 3 shot bracket processed in LR<HDR> & PS

I found this to be an amazing sunset even by Island standards. I wanted to capture what Islanders saw almost every day when the weather was good. The sunset occurred not far from the B&B we were staying at.
For those not familiar with it Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada is largest of the Fundy Islands in the Bay of Fundy. It is an idyllic place with some 2300 permanent residents and accessible by car ferry.

Thanks for looking-comments welcome!

May I suggest that you crop the top to just above that blue patch of sky on the left. This would allow you to concentrate on the beautiful rays of the sunset. The very top is a bit murky.

I like the depth of this image with the rocks in the foreground, the tree and shore on the right with the low tide pools for mid-ground and the distant shore and clouds as a background. The right shore and high clouds frame and hold you in. Of course I haven't even mentioned the setting sun and rays peaking through and providing outstanding light for the entire scene. I was thinking I would consider a slight crop of the top and after reading Richard Harper's comment, if I understand his "blue patch" sentence, I think he has it about right. Great image.   Posted: 08/09/2019 10:13:52

I think this is a lovely island and I can see why you would want to capture all its beauty. I, too, would crop just where the rays touch the clouds. Although I think the clouds are also spectacular, they do take away from the glorious rays. I would even dare to crop the boulders at the bottom so that my eyes would settle on the reflection on the water. I would sit on the boulders contemplating such beauty. The leading line of the shore would take me right to the sun's rays.   Posted: 08/09/2019 16:16:07

Very well done image - I particularly like the peaking sun, but would agree with other comments regarding a top crop.   Posted: 08/10/2019 10:06:25

I agree with others' comments. In addition to those, I think the reflection of the clouds in the right edge of the shoreline is beautiful! And I love how the evergreen stands out so crisply against the setting sun. Beautiful shot!   Posted: 08/10/2019 16:06:22

The God Rays are real attention getter. My eye went straight to them then broadened out to the rest of the image. I rather like it as it is   Posted: 08/13/2019 06:32:43

Many thanks for the feedback- much appreciated.
And Carroll I think the idea of calling the sunset God Rays is great!

A great time of day and perfect conditions for photography. I would agree with a slight crop off the clouds as the large area does compete with the foreground or maybe a crop from the bottom to give the clouds more prominence. All in all a great end to the day.   Posted: 08/14/2019 03:41:48
