Hi Tracy, I think this is a wonderful image in its composition.I really like the way the blue wall accents the white fountain.
I have 2 minor suggestions,
1.see what effect cropping the wall from the left a bit more has...by my doing it by inspection another 1/4 inch may make the fountain `pop' even more
2. In the future you may want to shoot at f8 - f11 to give yourself a bit more shutter speed to enhance sharpness (I'm assuming you did this handheld <?>)   Posted: 03/08/2019 14:17:23

Hi Norm, thanks for your suggestions! I'll give that cropping a try. I was shooting on a tripod--I don't recall why I was shooting at f/20. I usually like to be in the mid-range--it was probably a setting leftover from shooting exterior buildings of the park. I was kind of flustered since I was set up in the middle of a pathway and I was trying not to get in the way of the few tourists coming through, so I may have just forgotten to readjust the f-stop.   Posted: 03/08/2019 15:21:32

Tracy, never underestimate the complexity of simplicity, and this is what this image implies. I just straightened the water fountain and cropped it to the rule of thirds. Now there is less empty space.   Posted: 03/09/2019 11:39:46

Hi Isaac, thank you for your comments! I appreciate your posting the edited image. I thought I had straightened the fountain in my shot, but your image is definitely straighter. I'm wondering if I posted the wrong one of my images--I'll have to go back and check. But definitely it looks better straightened! Thanks!   Posted: 03/11/2019 17:12:10

If you like the "negative space" to the left of the fountain, I would keep it in the image. It makes the fountain look sort of lonely and I like that. The fountain is not exactly straight vertically and I think it should be. The tones of blue on the wall are perhaps a bit unusual but they work well with the white fountain.   Posted: 03/09/2019 22:40:35

Hi Stan, I hadn't thought about the negative space making the fountain look sort of lonely--and I like that analogy. I've been leaning toward keeping that expanse of wall because I felt the fountain had a physical "weight" to it--and I wanted something in the image to help balance that weight. Thanks for your comments!   Posted: 03/11/2019 17:16:07

I, too, like the simplicity of this image. I think it is the curves on top of the fountain and the solid colors that make this image work. I look to see what makes it work so that I can be looking for those items in my future captures.

I agree with Stan that the fountain is not exactly straight but that should be easy for you to fix.   Posted: 03/10/2019 11:58:06

Hi Marcela, I agree, I like to see what works in others' photos--it helps me understand my own shots better so I can make progress at improving. I'm definitely going to straighten the fountain out. I thought I had, but apparently I either didn't straighten it enough, or I posted the wrong version of the shot :-(   Posted: 03/11/2019 17:19:31

Simply great. I like the composition, a great eye for a picture. This is another image I would not alter.   Posted: 03/14/2019 11:08:56

A really simple and impactful image. The white contrast with the blue wall really makes it pop. The minor adjustment to level the fountain is good but it is always possible the fountain was not install perfectly.   Posted: 03/16/2019 19:27:17

Lovely simple image - the soft lighting enhances the details of this fountain. I love the shadow of the bowl and to my eye either your original image or cropped image work beautifully.   Posted: 03/23/2019 10:42:03
