About the Image(s)

I grabbed an image of my cat, Luna, standing on a pedestal and knew I wanted to use it somewhere. I initially placed her face in a hole in a door but wasn't satisfied with the outcome. I found a piece of slate on a recent shoot and thought it would make a nice opening for Luna to peer through. Correcting the slate image in Lightroom a realised additional data in the shadows, a kind of mottled background. When I placed Luna there, and applied a Pin Light blending mode, it began to look like her entire coat. I was hoping for an air of mystery.

I like the effect of broken glass with the cat staring through, as if to say 'It wasn't me, honest!' Have you tried it with the 'glass' rotated vertically and the cat looking through from a higher position? Just a thought! I know that you have added some brightness around part of the cat's head to make it stand out more. Possibly you could also slightly brighten the dark area behind the cat, to make mog's face even more visible?   Posted: 05/04/2022 13:52:25

That's a great idea. I'll give it a go.I added a blening mode in Photoshop, which created the brightness around the cat. I'll try masking the backgound area and brighten it to see how it looks. Good ideas. Thanks.   Posted: 05/04/2022 17:46:12

Great thought. I suggest moving the cat's head up slightly so there is more cat and less black in the opening. Also, I suggest a tighter crop - mainly on the top.   Posted: 05/09/2022 08:24:18

I like that suggestion and will give it a try. Thanks.   Posted: 05/09/2022 10:03:53

A most clever idea ! Maybe it would be a bit stronger with a tighter crop to focus on the cat ? AND I like the original too !!A most handsome feline ............   Posted: 05/10/2022 15:27:53

Thanks, Mark. I agree that a tighter crop will work best. The lovely feline is Luna, my photogenic one-year old. Cheers.   Posted: 05/10/2022 15:47:01

I think your idea to use Luna in more creative way was a good one. however I think this might be considered a work in progress? My suggestion would be to work on the slate image by selecting the hole and deleting the contents. Then you could move Luna in complete with a white background and hopefully much more detail in the face.   Posted: 05/12/2022 15:25:23

Thank you, Ian. I was attracted to the slate, but your idea is an interesting one that I'll give a try.   Posted: 05/15/2022 14:27:41

Pretty cat!
I agree that the positioning and lighting of the cat's head could be improved. Otherwise a neat idea worthwhile working on further.   Posted: 05/15/2022 11:07:19

Thanks, Andrew. I'll combine ideas from the group to improve on the image.   Posted: 05/15/2022 14:28:30
