Salisbury Crags by Joe Norcott

March 2023 - Salisbury Crags

About the Image(s)

Edinburgh, Scotland, Sept. 2019. On our trip in Scotland we stayed at an AirBnb top floor apartment and from our bedroom window had a view of it. This was taken right after hurricane Dorian left Edinburgh. Timing of the clouds clearing out with the moon was great. Nikon D3300, Lens 55-200mm. Some cropping in Photoshop with minor adjustments in Luminar Neo. Settings: ISO 100, F4, 1/160s lens set to 55mm

Nice composition with the moon and the city in the background. Added contrast in the sky might add some drama. Two sliders in Lightroom come to mind: clarity and de-haze.   Posted: 03/07/2023 19:34:28

I love the sky colors, and the moon - but agree with Glenn about drama in the sky. Also think that cropping from the bottom and side helps bring focus to the sky. I did a little editing in photoshop ACR. Clarity dehaze and texture in the sky   Posted: 03/08/2023 21:29:52

I like the edit on the sky. I was having challenges trying to change it so I left it as is in the photo. Thanks!   Posted: 03/12/2023 19:02:53

I also agree that adding clarity and dehaze to the sky improves the image. The sky has so much natural drama that could be accentuated.   Posted: 03/09/2023 12:22:43

Hi Joe: To me, the sky holds more interest than the land. I like Sheldon's modifications. The sky now has drama added and by cropping along the the bottom and right side, the scene is now more of a nature scene. Maybe that was what your original thought was?   Posted: 03/09/2023 13:25:49

I recall seeing Salisbury Crags on the skyline during visits to Edinburgh. I did not get this close. I do agree with Sheldons work on the sky. What a great view you had from your accomodation.   Posted: 03/15/2023 08:07:35

Nice image - I like Sheldon's adjustments to the sky and the emphasis on the sky, as opposed to the land. I would also crop so that the white building on the right is removed - it's a bit distracting and doesn't add to the image (Sheldon removed the building as well).   Posted: 03/15/2023 11:43:33

Interesting post about altering photos with an example of the sky. My sky is original in my photo and now I wonder if Sheldon's adjustment to it which I like would not be acceptable.   Posted: 03/31/2023 06:52:20
