Bass Harbor Lighthouse by Glenn Rudd

January 2021 - Bass Harbor Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

I participated in a photography workshop at Acadia National Park in 2019. This is an iconic location at sunset and our group spent several hours there. I shot this in HDR bracketing shutter speed in 1 stop increments. Unfortunately, there were no dramatic clouds but still a pretty picture.
Technical: HDR, f/8, ISO200, 44mm

A powerful image with a strong composition and well handled exposure and processing. The light on the rocks and the lighthouse is excellent as is that of the sunset. I agree that it is a pretty picture and it would look good on a calendar or in a guide book. The negative space above the sunset has plenty of room for a title even if that might destroy the overall effect.   Posted: 01/10/2021 04:05:58

Hey Glenn - knock it off! Is there a genre where you have some mediocre images??? This is another definite wall hanger! The lighting is spectacular on the rocks, the lighthouse, and in the sunset. I have tried this angle several times only to be frustrated by the late comers who have little or no respect for those of us who got there early and set-up. I did not see any mention of other photographers.   Posted: 01/10/2021 14:57:49

Thanks Joe. There were at least 30 photographers there. Our group arrived early and picked our spots . Fortunately, no one jumped in front of me.   Posted: 01/10/2021 15:10:19

I fear you were the guy standing right in front of me!

Actually we were there at vastly different times but just about the same spot. I was alone on the rocks for sunset, but the temperature was a chilly 25 degrees.

You captured an iconic setting quite well and the lack of clouds are not worth worrying about since there is good color in the sky as is. I like your composition and the reflected light on the rocks. This is well done.

If I would suggest anything it would have been to move the lighthouse slightly to the left so it would not seem so crowded and near the edge of the frame.

Beautiful. Composition, colors, etc. etc. I'd like to see a version where the brightness of the lighthouse is increased to more closely match the rocks below it. Not sure if that would be an improvement, but my eye keeps going back to the rocks and I think it should spend more time on the lighthouse.   Posted: 01/12/2021 08:19:48

Good suggestion Sheldon. I will try that on my version for competition.   Posted: 01/15/2021 09:09:07

A sunset worth going for. Great colour and a good composition. I like that the red in the lighthouse lamp complements the setting sun. I would liked to have seen the lighthouse a touch lighter.   Posted: 01/15/2021 09:52:49

As a Ferengi (Star Trek)"I hate humaans...in my photos". :).
Really nice and your timing of the sun on the horizon helps to light up the rocks and the lighthouse.   Posted: 01/31/2021 09:42:19
