December 2020 - Don't Move

About the Image(s)

In May 2019, I attended a portrait workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over a 5-day period we had access to 18 models in three different locations. This image was taken in an abandoned power plant with a 200-foot-long wall of 12-foot-high north-facing windows; perfect light. The name of the model is Clebert Garcia. He is a native of that state and a genuine cowboy. This was my favorite pose emphasizing the imminent danger of a 6-shooter aimed at the viewer.

Technical: .4 sec, f/22, ISO 125, 42 mm

Glenn, you really should put together a book with some of these western images, "How the West Was Won!" This image is just another in a series of well-captured and detail-oriented work by you. The pictured angle captured the intensity of the moment. We have heard the expression, "staring down the barrel" - you gave it to us! I did see small faint circles around the gunslinger - they could be removed effortlessly. Let me know when your book come out!   Posted: 12/03/2020 11:29:14

Really like the portrait. Better than just someone smiling. The gun is very centered in the photo.   Posted: 12/03/2020 15:54:44

Glenn, at first I thought the gun was too high and blocking the face, but then I realized that it is pointing directly to my eyes, and leads me to the right rest of the image. Great shot.   Posted: 12/05/2020 07:33:56

This image makes me very uncomfortable. Gun pointed right at me - finger on the trigger, and what appears to be light glinting off the nose of bullets in the cylinder. You definitely achieved your objective. What was done to assure the gun wasn't functional? I don't know if I would have been brave enough to stand there, shooting back with just a camera. On a photographic note, I'd consider two other croping options. One to a little below the hand and coat pocket, and the other just below the third button from the top. I think either of those would bring more attention to the gun and cowboy's eyes.   Posted: 12/08/2020 23:25:37

It would be possible to find all kinds of niggly little things to say about this image - such as the turned over flap on this guy's pocket or the slightly bright areas on his coat but what would be the point? This is a great image and full of drama. The fact that the gun does obscure some of his face is irrelevant as others have said as the look in his eyes is very clear to see as he takes aim. Every time you post one of these images you need to remember my envy for all your character shots - but keep them coming anyway!   Posted: 12/10/2020 07:53:30

I like this in many ways , technically, compositionally and the pose is great. Mono has to be the colour for this subject. The way the gun points straight at the viewer is both clever and slightly disturbing.
