Storm over Hanalei by Dick Perkins

September 2020 - Storm over Hanalei

About the Image(s)

Image as a typical late day storm was brewing over a field in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. Clarity is challenged by the heavy moisture in the distant air, but adds the proper mood. Looking closely at the horse proves that he was excited about it also.

Brings back fond memories as I had timeshare in this area for many years! As a landscape, I enjoyed looking at the view. I don't think the horse adds anything to the overall pix. You have a strong foreground, a good middle area, and a very pleasing backdrop! My screen shows something going on with the tops of those middle ground trees. Did you try to selectively sharpen this part?   Posted: 09/08/2020 12:54:42

Joe: I don't recall about the trees. It is an older image. I like yours better anyway, though the sky remains a challenge to post-processing.   Posted: 09/08/2020 14:26:42

Tweaked up your clouds a bit. Any better?   Posted: 09/08/2020 14:57:08

Somewhat, thanks. But I was referring earlier to your clouds -- a bit grainy, but that is common with post-processing, I think.   Posted: 09/08/2020 15:14:53

Pretty scene. I like the composition, including the horse. On my screen there are a lot of bright speckles in the leaves in the foreground and the mid ground trees - perhaps blown out. Not a fit to the smooth green of the rest of the image.   Posted: 09/08/2020 18:48:45

This was a difficult shot to achieve perfection in every section - a real challenge. I think the horse is an important feature and fortunately is in just about the right place. I really like the light on its back. If I was to attempt anything I would consider darkening the mountain range a little to add even more drama.   Posted: 09/11/2020 03:15:27

Definitely a really good photo with a challenging and differential daylight scenario. The only ideas I can advise is adjusting the details a little like Joe did of the mountain side and bringing down the brightness/speckles of the forefront. Again the forefront is a challenge since it is brighter than the background. Nice photo!   Posted: 09/11/2020 20:35:23

I like this much the way it is, a pleasant mountain scene with a well placed horse in the foreground to give interest and scale. The light on the foreground helps to make the point of the approaching storm over the mountains.   Posted: 09/14/2020 04:12:21

I like the mountain-meadow scene. A little tighter crop might improve the impact. Also, the sky is great. Perhaps a little "targeted adjustment brush" treatment with de-haze to add to the drama. The fog adds some mystery. The action at the tops of the trees mentioned by Joe is a little distracting.   Posted: 09/15/2020 19:22:57
