August 2020 - The spearfisher

About the Image(s)

Great blue heron with Florida gar caught in his bill. One can see how it was done. What one cannot immediately see is how he gets the fish from impaled on his beak into same. He left before I could capture that. Image improved somewhat for contrast and fine feather detail.

Maybe the fish stayed there a long time unless his mate or another hustling heron took it off him! Good sharp image. Might consider toning down the background grasses slightly   Posted: 08/11/2020 10:28:27

Good nature story, Dick. I think the subject matter is captured well. Maybe the background grasses could be toned down or blurred to further emphasize the heron?   Posted: 08/12/2020 11:41:39

Great story - agree with others about background blur. Love the pink heron tongue. Good detail in the feathers. Interesting fish - never seen one of them before.   Posted: 08/12/2020 12:55:05

A well caught moment, that look in the birds eye kind of says it all about what to do next. I like the close crop, and the sharpness, the background does not bother me.   Posted: 08/14/2020 07:57:45

Great capture Dick. The all-important eye is sharp and the impaled fish tells the story. As mentioned by others, diminishing the background would be helpful and adding some negative space on the left might also improve the composition.   Posted: 08/14/2020 14:12:43
