Rebound by Joe Kennedy

June 2020 - Rebound

About the Image(s)

“Rebound” was taken at my local high school’s girl’s basketball game. I liked the interaction of the players, especially that all three players had reached their vertical limit going for the “Rebound!”

F/3.2 2 1/125 sec. with an ISO of 1800. The usual post-production for me “ photoshop with a heave dose of NIK.

Nice action shot with lots of human interest built in. Hard to say who actually ended up with it. But they were obviously having a ball. Too bad not more fans appear.   Posted: 06/07/2020 07:34:54

Baaaad pun - "obviously having a ball!" Low fan turnout as it was Girls' JV and I was shooting into the visitor's stands. Many more around me on the home side   Posted: 06/09/2020 13:36:56

Good color and toning. Looks like it was shot without flash. Tough to do action indoors without flash - good job catching the top of the jump so there was minimal blur.   Posted: 06/09/2020 18:24:55

You have captured the physicality of the sport here. The slight blur on the shoes of one of the players adds to this sports shot. I think the background doesn't help even though it is empty of spectators. Maybe you might consider masking it and applying some blur so that this three leap out of the frame, as it were.   Posted: 06/10/2020 03:18:59

Thanks, Peter. Here is a rough remake of "Rebound" with your suggestion   Posted: 06/10/2020 18:20:40

That remake does bring them forward well and also add an extra dynamic to the shot. Possibly if you want to do more work on it, I'd also suggest darkening the background generally and in particular the lighter grey strip at the top.   Posted: 06/11/2020 03:05:36

I liked the original and silently marveled at how lucky you were to capture all three with all the hands on the ball. I agree that Peter's change is an asset to the image.   Posted: 06/11/2020 19:43:40

I like the moment that you have caught. The action is great. I would agree with Peters suggestion and I think your remake proves the point.   Posted: 06/13/2020 08:29:37

Great action shot with a nice story. Lots of detail for such a slow shutter speed. I like the blurred background as suggested by Peter. Not sure I agree with darkening idea.   Posted: 06/13/2020 09:08:42
