Jose en Caballo by Glenn Rudd

March 2020 - Jose en Caballo

About the Image(s)

In May 2019, I attended a portrait workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over a 5-day period we had access to 18 models in three different locations. This image was taken on a movie set. The name of the model is Joe Garcia. He is a native of the west and a genuine cowboy. The drama of this scene is enhanced by the ominous gathering storm clouds. The storm arrived about 30 minutes later and we headed back to Santa Fe.
Technical: 1/640 sec, f/11, ISO 500, 200 mm

This is extraordinary. It is just great and has wonderful design, composition, and clarity. Personally I would crop the bottom just enough to eliminate the intrusive vegetation, and make it a little more panoramic, but that is gilding the lily. Superb result. The detail in the horse is remarkable.   Posted: 03/04/2020 08:22:32

Winner - wouldn't change a thing. I could go on about the lighting, toning, composition etc. but I'm sure you already know that. Who did you do the workshop with. I'm going to Santa Fe with Arizona Highways Photoscapes next month (still no Coronavirus in New Mexico).   Posted: 03/06/2020 16:37:28

Just one word, WOW!

This has to be one of the best images I have seen in my study groups for quite some time!! Yeh, maybe a little off the bottom would help but the overall impact is stunning. Keep us posted as the how it fares in competitions. Our club uses a 30 point system, so this would probably be at least a 35:)   Posted: 03/06/2020 18:54:50

This takes me back to the days when as a youngster I was always a cowboy and pretended that I was in fact Roy Rogers. A very powerful image and wonderful in mono. Brilliant.   Posted: 03/10/2020 12:05:05

Straight out of a western from my much younger days. A 'magnificent' picture, he just needs the other six to join him. Choosing monochrome was spot on for me, that is how I remember seeing cowboys.I would not change a thing.   Posted: 03/13/2020 06:05:28
