Jack-in-the Pulpit by Glenn Rudd

December 2019 - Jack-in-the Pulpit

About the Image(s)

"Jack-in-the Pulpit" was taken inside the temperature/humidity controlled "Climatron" at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens. The bright contrasting colors and perfectly formed features of the flower set in a deep green background made for an irresistable subject to photograph.
Technical: 1/2 sec, f/18, ISO200, 105mm Macro lens.

Colorful and pleasing image, Glenn. Title would have to be author's label, since I believe the plant is actually an anthurium and Jack-in-the-Pulpit is a different critter. Shame on St. Louis if they mislabeled it. Also, the lovely leaf to the right competes enough to make the image almost a two-parter with the viewer left to decide which element to look at. Each, however, is very pleasing.   Posted: 12/03/2019 16:05:59

Glenn, great color throughout this image! The greens and the reds are popping off my screen!!! The detail is spot on but that's one of the signatures of a Glenn Red image. I expect nothing less.

The large leaf to the right of the red plant appears to be taking up much of the frame and perhaps could be given a lesser role in this frame. I'll bow to Dick on plant identification.   Posted: 12/04/2019 09:29:15

Great shot with wonderful contrast of colours. The moisture on the leaf is particularly effective and for that reason would be loathe to crop too much or at all.   Posted: 12/05/2019 07:50:21

Great colors and sharp. For me, the bright areas on the large green leaf takes some attention away from the red flower. I'd consider darkening it so that it plays more of a background role. I also think that a crop from the right, up to but not including the red flower at the bottom, could help focus attention on the flower on the left.

a colourful and striking flower, I like the composition and the sharpness.Maybe a bit of work to loose that other competing red flower at the bottom would be nice.   Posted: 12/12/2019 05:40:56

Just FYI, here is what a jack-in-the-pulpit usually looks like. One can see how the name was chosen.   Posted: 12/13/2019 10:29:03
