Repeating Shapes by John Hackett

November 2019 - Repeating Shapes

About the Image(s)

Taken near Malin Head in Ireland. I like the repeating shapes of the rock, small island and the cloud. I felt that monochrome showed them better than colour.

Hi, I am visiting from Monochrome Group 32. You had a good eye for this: the small rock, the large rock outcrop, the island rock, the cloud. Nice progression. Looks great in monochrome. Congratulations.   Posted: 11/02/2019 15:43:15

I like it a great deal. Can only wish it were a wider shot with a little more separation of the rock elements. I have an urge to step to the right, open up the middle some, reduce the element on the left, and center the foreground rock. But that's just one person's idea. Excellent technique and choice of monochrome.   Posted: 11/06/2019 15:37:56

I like the progression of the rocks and sky in this but think it is a little flat. Maybe try playing with the contrast or curves would give it a little more impact.   Posted: 11/07/2019 07:57:37

I agree with Peter's comment on contrast. I also think there is another picture there. Consider cropping between the small rock and what I think is a gravel path above it, as well as a little from the left. This leaves the rock in the background framed between the clouds, and bluff on the left, and the gravel path leads your eye into the image from the lower right corner. Brightening the rock in the background would also help establish it as the center of interest. Just an opinion.   Posted: 11/10/2019 21:14:42

I do like the triangular set-up with the foreground rock, the outcropping on the left and the rock in the water. Detail appears to be fairly sharp throughout. My issue is with the overall "flatness" of the scene. Perhaps Peter and Sheldon's thoughts would help here.   Posted: 11/11/2019 10:42:39

Very nice capture of the progression of the rocks into the cloud. I agree with the others that the image appears a little flat. It needs more drama, perhaps with levels, curves, or adjusting the colors in the monochrome rendering. The monochrome choice is a winner.   Posted: 11/13/2019 15:24:55
