'Her Indoors' by Peter Elliston

July 2017 - 'Her Indoors'

About the Image(s)

This was taken on the beach at a small seaside town called Beer on the South coast of England. It was a blisteringly hot day. I’ve always been interested in people who own beach huts and this couple were really enjoying theirs. I also tried out merging three exposures so that I could get the detail inside the hut as well as that outside but it was basically taken at 1/500 at f11 with an ISO of 250 on my Fuji XT1. They also had a small dog which I wanted in the picture but it didn’t oblige when I was taking this shot but did later but by then they were on the move and the moment had gone. It’s been cropped and adjusted in Photoshop to reduce highlights and whites. I’s probably want to call it ‘Her in doors’ which in the UK is quite a well known expression.

Cheers and welcome, Peter. We are a diverse group with a wide talent range. You will obviously add greatly to our imagery.
I enjoy this image a lot. Very human "naturely" at work. I would be proud if it were mine and probably call it "The Shady Lady." Can't imagine the bare feet on that substrate but I'm a tender-footed American. Glad to have your eye and mind with us.   Posted: 07/06/2017 21:50:48

Many thanks for your kind welcome and comments on my first image. Your suggested title is a really good one and I think I may adopt it from now on as it has a far wider appeal.
I am looking forward to working with the group because I have found it's always good to have several different views on our images.

Welcome to PID 17, Peter!

Thanks for the feedback on my industrial image.

I was leaning more toward, "Boss Lady" for a title but I think Dick's has a nicer ring to it. As for the image itself, I do like the interaction between the two main subjects - immersed in their reading. Glad to see they did not have their noses stuck in their iPhones - testament to the older generation, perhaps. Think you handled the lighting well considering the time of day. Maybe a little punch in the contrast might darken down the brighter areas.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work and hear your comments!   Posted: 07/07/2017 07:35:12

A bit of humour creeping in here, and I like it. For once I can say I know the location. Well seen and taken.   Posted: 07/10/2017 07:25:20

Welcome to the group Peter. Your first image is very interesting and tells a nice "beach" story. The image has good depth of focus and is well composed and developed.   Posted: 07/10/2017 10:27:32

Many thanks for all the useful and kind comments on my first image with this group.   Posted: 07/12/2017 03:37:20

Hi Peter and welcome! I am glad you joined us. I was the new kid on the block for quite a while. I am probably the most inexperienced member in the group, but I keep trying and learning. Your image reminds me of the 4 months I spent in Bournemouth
many, many years ago. The image is well balanced (a lot of threes) and depicts total relaxation. I like it very much.

Many thanks for your welcome and comments. I hadn't really noticed the 'threes' so thanks for that. 4 months in Bournemouth - hope that was a good experience and not one in a beach hut!   Posted: 07/15/2017 05:32:57

I find this imge very homey, well presented on how the retirement life should be. Both with their reading materials and him with shirt and shoes off, seemed like they are absorbed in the moment!

Thanks for your comments. Yes they were well into their books so much so that taking the image was not that difficult!   Posted: 07/24/2017 02:51:11
