Mississippi River Fog by Joan Funk

About the Image(s)

We rented a small houseboat on the upper Mississippi River and traveled from town to town, enjoying them all. Each town had public docks on the river, free for any boaters needing a place to dock while visiting the town. When awakening in the morning at the dock in Wabasha, Minnesota, I was greeted by a sunrise fog. I grabbed my camera, of course, and took this image at 1/40 second, f/8.0, ISO 200, 59mm with my Sony A6300 camera, at 6:50am on a chilly October morning.

After cropping and basic edits (lightening shadows, increasing vibrance), I took the image into Photoshop to remove the debris in the water, and used Topaz AI DeNoise to remove noise and sharpen the image a bit. What a difference a little editing makes!

Joan, Beautiful image. Your crop works well. I especially like your treatment of the sky. Warming it up, to my eye, improves the image and gives it a wonderful ambience. It sounds as if you had a terrific trip.   Posted: 10/01/2020 11:46:58

Dear Joan, I like the orange sky and morning mists. Your processing is nice. The bridge without beginning and end is a little bit distractive. I don't know whether you had possibility to float around to omit it and found some other boats for object.

Bogdan, I appreciate your comments. For better or worse, I could not move the boat, and at sunrise, the boat driver was sound asleep.   Posted: 10/11/2020 12:02:50

Portrays the mood very well. Good processing. Perhaps a bit busy, but that is personal preference, Excellent.   Posted: 10/12/2020 13:31:48

Joan, although I love what you have done transform this image into a golden beauty, I feel that the soft, misty feel of the original is what made you have to grab your camera to capture it. Each of the elements in the original work for me without too much adjustment. In the original, I love the feel of space, the sense of the boat shrouded in the morning fog, to small line of color or the first light of the day. It is truly a beautiful image!   Posted: 10/13/2020 17:23:27

I love the image. Your cropping and adjustments look good. The mist and shadow of the bridge add to the image. I think you can play with shadows to bring more details on boat and building.   Posted: 10/16/2020 12:50:29

Very nice shot. I really like the way the reflection of the bridge curves to the right side of the image. Mohanan's detail in the reflection of the bridge and the boat helps improve the image.   Posted: 10/16/2020 17:23:07
