About the Image(s)

Taken 2020 July 11 09:53 in Santa Barbara, CA, USA.

The wrens nested in a hanging pot next to our front door in Santa Barbara, CA, USA. We worried because the parents flew away whenever we opened the door, but they always came back to nurse them. The oldest flew a couple days before this photo but came back. The chicks did not seem upset with our observations and photos. A couple days after, all four flew off, with the youngest struggling, when we opened the door never to return.

Camera was in an iPhone 7S. No addition or removal of objects in editing, but strong vignette. I used Lightroom develop sliders and Photoshop high pass filter sharpening.

Beautiful chicks. Your trimming looks good to me. I liked the colors of the chicks in the original photo. It has more details of patterns on the feathers. The strong vignette appears good. The processing changed the black color of the eyes of lower two birds.   Posted: 08/01/2020 14:10:13

How lucky you were to come upon this nest. Wonderful capture.

I too prefer the colors and details in the original chicks, as well as the colors in the nest. The nest seems awfully dark to me, with the amount of light on the chicks. And you've lost details in the darkness.   Posted: 08/01/2020 14:18:22

I did brighten the eye highlights. I reduced the detraction of the nest and greenery, and brightened the birds. I sharpened the feather detail.

Thanks for your opinions.

Walter, I am enjoying the painterly effect you achieved. My only suggestion is to consider removing the twig that is close to the eye of the chick on the bottom.   Posted: 08/07/2020 13:04:00

Thanks, Bunny, for your excellent suggestion. I have chosen to keep the image qualifying for our club nature category that does not allow removal or addition of objects.   Posted: 08/07/2020 13:19:40

Then the stick stays! I do think your image has potential as a pictorial image. So if you decide to switch categories one day, you can make sure the little bird doesn't poke out its eye!   Posted: 08/07/2020 14:09:02

Walter, what an exciting catch! This is a very special image and one that is also in many ways challenging. I have taken the liberty to take it into Luminar and only made simple color adjustments without hopefully will still qualify for your club's nature category. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 08/08/2020 12:12:37
