About the Image(s)

Shopkeepers waiting for customers in the old medina. Marrakesh, Morocco, November 5, 2018.

Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 MFT camera; Lumix Vario Lens 12-35/f2.8; Focal length 16 mm; 1/100 sec, ISO 200, F5.6

This is a travel photo I took while visiting Morocco. The inside of the store and the section over the doorway was too dark, so I used this as an opportunity to learn how to use luminosity masks with a single exposure (in Photoshop). I watched a tutorial by Jimmy McIntyre, creator of Raya Pro (a PS plug-in), who calls this technique double or triple processing. It is a way to increase dynamic range and control tonality. Although one could take an HDR photo, he has convinced me that this technique has much more control and more possibilities than HDR. Also in Photoshop, I used the high-pass filter to sharpen the image.

After getting the dynamic range I wanted, I cropped the image. In Lightroom I make small adjustments using Dehaze and Vibrance. Then, in Luminar, I applied a small amount of sunset warmth effect (setting 10 out of 100).

Interesting image. A nice travel photo subject. Your adjustments are excellent. The materials kept inside the shop also clearly visible after processing. I think almost similar effect can be achieved using Shadows/Highlight option in photoshop.   Posted: 08/01/2020 03:18:01

You did a wonderful job with the "luminosity mask," making the inside of the store as attractive as what is going on outside. I like the bright colors of all the objects. The shopkeepers add interest to an already interesting scene. Good travel photo.   Posted: 08/01/2020 12:32:31

Bunny, what a WONDERFUL image. You have handled the colors spot on and I can't believe the amount of detail you were able to bring out from both inside the door and the wood grain on the doors itself. The only addition I think you should consider is a slight vignette which would move your eye to the main feature of this image.   Posted: 08/02/2020 17:06:16

Terry, Thanks for the suggestion. I considered a vignette but I didn't want to darken the spices and their colorful containers which, to me, is also of interest.   Posted: 08/07/2020 13:14:53

An excellent image with multiple colors and people to add interest. Lightroom, Detail, with black and shadows sliders works to bring out the dark interior also. You did just the right amount of enhancement so it doesn't look artificial.   Posted: 08/07/2020 13:46:30

I just agree with the others. You did a very good job bringing out the detail, especially in the dark areas. I think it's best to save vignettes for creative or images that have distractions around the outside edges. This image has so many interesting areas with detail, it is great to see them. This is what probably why you took the shot.   Posted: 08/19/2020 08:19:02

Interesting travel shot and perfect processing. I like more vivid colors then original.

About vignette. It's not permitted in Travel division, because the image looses it's natural lookout.
