About the Image(s)

When I visited Yellowstone National Park last year, I loved the beautiful Yellowstone Upper Falls. Numerous overlooks have been created, where tourists can get amazing views of the Falls. At one overlook, I captured the Falls as seen off in the distance between 2 tourists.

Using my little Sony RX100 M6, my settings were 1/400 sec. at F/8, ISO 400.

I cropped a bit, then used 2 tools in NIK Color Efex to extract more details, and to separately darken both the center and the border. Finally, I used Topaz Sharpen AI to remove noise while sharpening the image.

Hi Joan, I love the concept of shooting through, or between, things to something else that's scenic. With a scene like Yellowstone Falls, it's really the only way to get an image that stands out from the thousands of others taken at that spot. I wish the tourists were standing a bit more apart so that I could clearly see the bottom of the falls and the lovely spray that I know is there. Very often the falls have a rainbow in that spray. That would have been something to capture.

I find that women's clothing a bit distracting as the clash of colors and patterns overpower, to my eye, the lovely nature aspects of the scene.   Posted: 06/02/2020 10:05:27

Thank you, Bunny. I have taken down the brightness of her clothing colors and like it much better.   Posted: 06/24/2020 12:38:17

Joan, what a GREAT image! Had you dressed and posed these tourists, you could not have made a better choice for colors and positions. Although the falls are lovely, I think the real story here is the people and seeing the falls through their eyes. It makes me think of a modern day American Gothic painting. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 06/12/2020 19:54:12

Interesting concept. The image is sharp with good lighting. Your post processing resulted in more details of the visitors and sky. I liked the details in the hats too. My eyes go around the image and come to the bright clothing of the lady. I tried to burn the brightness on the colorful dress portion quickly.

One suggestion is that if you have an image of the fall without any visitors from the same angle, isolate the visitors from this image and place them a little apart, so that the fall is visible fully.   Posted: 06/16/2020 13:24:43

Thank you, Mohanan. I have lowered the saturation of the colors in her clothing. Interesting suggestion to move them to another photo of the same setting and put them farther apart. I'll give it a try.   Posted: 06/24/2020 12:40:43

Great vacation shot. I would only crop out a little of the sky. The popularity of Photo Shop is that we are never satisfied no mater how great the image. I am also reminded of the American Gothic painting we all know and love. I like your image.   Posted: 06/17/2020 13:25:39

Great Gothic like people. I too think it would have been a little better with the people farther apart to show more of the falls. Toning down the woman's clothing color helps. It might look more natural by de saturating rather than darkening. A great photo as it is.   Posted: 06/24/2020 11:44:45

Thank you, Walter. I have now de-saturated the clothing a little and it was a good improvement.   Posted: 06/24/2020 12:41:50

Interesting idea! Unfortunately the waterfall is so small, that I didn't notice it at the first moment. I would prefer to see the waterfall rights of the people.

The second thing, that is a little bit distracting is Cutting the heads with the horizont (edge between the hills and the sky). One rule is, that it's not good if the horizont crosses trees, people or other objects. I advise you to capture from a little bit higher or lower position.
