About the Image(s)

Let's return to sports photography - kayak.

Like 2 years ago my wife and me have got a photo accreditation for ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Ljubljana, Tacen, Slovenia. Beside many usual photos at 1/1000s I was trying to capture also with slow shutter 1/30 to 1/100s, trying to get milky-water effect. Following (or panning) of kayakers is not easy. They don't move in straight line. The waves moves the boat also vertically, sometimes decreasing the speed, so it's hard to get sharp image. I've found it possible with shutters less than 1/80s. Longer shutters were not successful.

Camera Nikon P900, ND filter, built-in lens at 30 mm, ISO 100, F8, 1/80s.

Processing: crop, contrast improvement with highlights, levels, selective levels and shadows and curves, everything in Photoshop Elements.

I think you are on the right track in capturing this kayaker. For using a shutter speed of 1/80 you did a great job in capturing the rider while softening the water. I would suggest that you try to achieve a more realistic skin tone as well as using a longer, narrower crop. The story is in man verses water. Allowing us to gain a better sense of where he is headed will help tell that story.   Posted: 08/13/2019 17:08:05

When I look at this image, I get a sense of heart-pounding action! I agree with Terry regarding the longer, narrower crop. The kayaker looks as if he is moving very fast and for me, I would like to see more space to the right for him to move into. To my eye, the skin tone looks a bit artificial. I am wondering if you can change that and lighten up his face so we can see his expression.   Posted: 08/14/2019 17:30:55

Good panning. Very difficult. The face needs work either in the original shot or in post processing. It might take some painting. Also difficult. Great action shot.   Posted: 08/14/2019 23:53:47

I like your crop because it fills the frame. The water has sharp edges which emphasizes the action and high speed. When photographing fast action sports, much like shooting birds, I don't think everything has to be perfect. With your shot, I feel like I'm standing right next to you enjoying the moment.
It's better than some shots I've seen published.

Great shot using a challenging technique. I can feel the speed of the kayak. I suggest you adjust the skin color to look more natural. Also, I would crop some of the left and some of the bottom to give the boat more room to move forward.   Posted: 08/15/2019 17:57:42

Good action shot. I liked the composition, your cropping is good. Lighting is not bad. The low shutter speed has blurred the face of Kayaker. You could achieve the milky-water effect. I think you can adjust the skin color in photoshop.   Posted: 08/17/2019 11:10:22
