About the Image(s)

Camera: Canon EOS 5DS R, 51MP, Lens EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. 1/2000 sec, ISO 800, f/8.0. Hand held.

Location and date: Lake Los Carneros, Goleta, CA, USA. 2018 September 15, 1042 hours PDT.

Subject and comments : Mallard duck landing. In response to a Channel City Camera Club Facebook challenge for a photo with reflection.

Editing: Lightroom crop and develop adjustments. Photoshop quick selection, adjustment layer, and hue adjustment of the reflection to more blue. The water was green because of low rain history and lake level. I suppose that disqualifies the image from nature category. Photoshop stroke.

Good capture of the mallard duck landing. Good color, except I find the blues a bit too saturated.

Unfortunately, you cropped more than the photo could bear, resulting in blurry wings. I think it would be a better photo with much less cropping, as a horizontal image with much more space above and the left of the duck - and a little space on the right - so there's space to show where the duck came from. The bird needs flying room.   Posted: 10/05/2018 14:06:07

It is exciting when we can capture birds doing more than sitting in the water. You did a great job of capturing the moment just before touchdown. You can indeed see the reflection.

I agree with Joan that the colors are a bit too saturated and that using a horizontal crop would help both with composition and reducing the number of pixels that are deleted. I would also like to suggest that you use a vignette which helps us keep our eye on the star of the image, the mallard.   Posted: 10/08/2018 09:44:58

I also agree with Joan...capturing birds in flight (including taking off or landing) is exciting to view. I would not add a vignette regardless of the nature rule. It would not improve the image.   Posted: 10/12/2018 11:55:40

Thanks for all your comments. The wings are blurred from their motion showing action. I agree the blue is overdone and unnatural. The cropping shows the shadow and reflection giving depth. I don't think added space is beneficial.   Posted: 10/15/2018 18:27:18

Nice action shot. The image looks sharp with good lighting to me. The original image did need a crop, but to me, the present crop appears to be too tight. I do not suggest vignette. The blue color seems to be overdone to me too.   Posted: 10/23/2018 02:46:04

Walter, flying birds are hard to capture. Also good cameras have troubles to get sharp image. Not just wings. With enlargement we see, that also head is not sharp enough. So I also suggest not so tight cropping.

Such symetrical image is only acceptable on the middle of image, not so right. I would also make landscape orientation of crop.   Posted: 10/24/2018 16:26:48
