About the Image(s)

I wanted to capture the soft effect of an early morning mist at the lake in our neighborhood.

Canon 5D Mk 4 with 24-105 lens at 105mm. Aperture priority at f/11, 800 ISO, 1/200 sec handheld.
Minimal editing in LrC. I did no editing for exposure or saturation because when I tried, it darkened the image and removed the appearance of the mist. I cropped the water to lower the shoreline which seemed a bit too close to the centerline. I used the clone tool to remove the white objects at the right hand side of the photograph because I found them distracting.

I welcome comments and upgrades.

Hi Billy, I can sense the feeling of the misty morning in the image! I think that the crop is a little tight for the nice reflection. I would prefer the original and would not worry about the shoreline. The triangles repeated in the pavilion , its reflection and the attic of the house make a nice composition.
I thought about adding the intensity of the mist which would allow to increase saturation and contrast a bit and still maintain the atmosphere. I attempted to do this in Affinity Photo by adding a layer of Gaussian blur and then wiping some off, and doing adjustments in black point, contrast, brightness and saturation. What do you think?   Posted: 02/06/2021 15:14:58

Hi Kirsti, I thank you for your excellent suggestions. You found a very creative way to maintain the effect of the mist while at the same time you improved the appearance of the dock.

Oops, sorry Kristi. I accidentally removed your image and don't know how to get it back. Maybe you could reenter it. I'll send you an email.

Billy,
I do like your attempt to capture the early morning fog. I think it works pretty well. Your eye goes to the white painted timbers of the boat house and then you can see the repeat in the house roof. If there were any way to get it even foggier looking, I would try. I think there's something in Color Efex Pro that will create fog, but I don't know if you can direct it to certain areas.
Krist's ideas are excellent and I hope she will replace her image that I accidentally knocked out.
I compliment you for getting up so early to take the shot.

Hi, I loaded the image to Color Efex Pro and found out that they have 4 different filters for layered fog, and you can freely adjust how thick/deep/from which direction it comes. Here is option 3 + graduated ND filter. I think that it works beautifully. Thank you for the tip, Joan!   Posted: 02/20/2021 02:03:24

Kristi,
Oh, good. My version has disappeared and I need to reload it somehow. New operating system. Glad it worked so well.   Posted: 02/20/2021 13:15:20

Hi Billy: To my eyes the original amount of mist is just fine. The amount of crop of the bottom the image is right. The mood the the image is so peaceful.   Posted: 02/26/2021 12:57:58

Billy, it feels very misty and early morning. The white of the dock does jump out at you, but I think it needs that pop to get you to the reflection and cabin. Nice work! I want to be sitting on that dock!   Posted: 02/28/2021 15:48:22
