March 2019 - Kiddy Kit Car

About the Image(s)

Here is my picture for this month. Unfortunately the original shot had a horse in the back ground tied out with lots of poop piles, so I had to take all that out. I tried to get the hay spread over the area but it doesn't look that good to me even if I did it correctly. I almost think it might look better if I just cloned in the dirt and spot healed out all the hay. Thoughts from everyone? I welcome all suggestions. I plan to enter it in the Fair in Automobiles, other thoughts?

Jeri,
The first thing that comes to mind has nothing to do with the background, which looks fine to me. It is that you constricted the image from right to left, squeezing it so that the individuals look too skinny. That is easy to fix. Just go back into Photoshop and with Command Option >C extend the horizontal width of the canvas by about two inches. Then using the Transform tool, hold down the Command key and pull on the right hand and left hand handles to pull out the image. You should probably choose only the original image, not the added space, for the Transform tool. I wonder if you ever had the feet and car tires in the image. If so, be sure to include them, as well.   Posted: 03/10/2019 16:51:13

Joan, it may have squeezed the wrong way when I did the resize to 1400 x 1280 to submit it. Maybe should have done it opposite as it doesn't look squeezed on the original. Unfortunately, I didn't get any foreground as I was trying to get the tall girl in and it was one of those snap now or forever forget the picture. I will try what you have suggested above to fix it. Thank you for the assistance to unsqueeze it and for the background suggestion to leave it. It was kind of neat with the horse in the background (horse power/kid power) but there wasn't enough of the horse and the kids wouldn't cooperate and repose so I could fit it all in. Maybe it lost its strength of story? Maybe it is really just 3 kids in a jeep?   Posted: 03/10/2019 17:04:45

I agree with all the comments made by Joan. When I first saw the image it looked like it had not had any post processing but I could not figure how the proportions could have been corrupted so much. Since you say that the distortion was created by the downsizing process I would consider cropping the original file to emphasize the 2 children in the jeep. Unless your purpose is to document some family activity I would take out the child that is standing and create your story around the 2 in the jeep.   Posted: 03/11/2019 09:48:15

Thank you Charles, something to consider. Not my children, so I could take out the tall girl and do as you suggested. I'll see what I can do. Yes, I think I downsized it wrong for submitting for this month. Will try again :-)   Posted: 03/11/2019 10:14:00

Jeri: I agree with With Joan and Charles' comments. A nice try. Try composing the image in the camera leaving a little room at the bottom of the picture for the tires of the vehicle. Then crop out the material not wanted the image. Try the image size with the largest dimension set at 1024. Does this make sense? **Rick**   Posted: 03/18/2019 12:02:52

Thanks Rick. Yes I redid the image at your suggestion and as you can see below it fixed itself. I will work on removing the tall girl. I learn a lot of "things to do in the future" and I'm finding I sometimes skip a shot because I can't get that opening or bottom. So I have to quit being so picky :-) Thank you all for your suggestions.   Posted: 03/18/2019 12:21:55

I do agree that the image was so squeezed. Actually, I like the tall girl there. I love her cute facial expression pushing the two kids.   Posted: 03/27/2019 17:29:16
