About the Image(s)

This is a bit of experimenting in storytelling, the building is one of the towers of the Transepts of Sydney’s St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral. At a recent outing in the city, I realized that on my travels overseas I have visited many fine churches and Cathedrals, but not in my city. The Cathedrals we have are interesting and designed in the classical style of many overseas, but we suffer from a lack of historical context, compared with London, Paris etc. With this image, I was attempting to portray the light and hope emanating from a church out of the gloom. I have revisited this image over several days working on this image (well various versions) trying to get a decent glow effect from the church’s transepts together with a few other attempts at giving an ethereal effect to the church. This is my final version, albeit I am not 100% happy with it but it was an interesting process in photoshop to convert this image to this final product. I would be extremely interested in your thoughts on both the image and my (probably poor) attempt at telling the story as mentioned above.

Tom,
I think you accomplished your goal. I think your transition stands on its own. Only one suggestion is to tone down the hot spots in the lower half. I think the compete with what you are trying to accomplish.
Best regards,

Hi Tom - Your image appears as a dream would as an illustration in a book or magazine. I like the impact. Greg has a good point about hot spots. I am not sure I like what's been done with the trees that are up close to the cathedral though. The B&W conversion was a great choice and really helps achieve the affects you are after and supports other processing touches. Nice job!   Posted: 04/05/2021 20:50:02

Thanks Darcy, the treatment of the trees close to the tower does look a bit out of place in hindsight, I will play with this area a bit more, was trying to define them without losing them to black. Thanks for pointing that out   Posted: 04/06/2021 23:38:11

Beautiful image, very dreaming, like a fairytale! Wonderful process! I don't know if you can add some mid-tone and darkest parts in the building. Otherwise, the whole building seems washed out to me   Posted: 04/07/2021 14:39:03

Hello Tom,

These images definitely evoke emotional reactions! Here are mine:
#1 (To the color original) Uplifting shot of the spires emerging fro the trees toward heaen.
#2 (Top of the B&W pic and I scroll down) Oh - this gives a gloomy sinister feel.
#3 (Title) Hmm - "Cathedral Glow" suggests hopefulness, but not what I was feeling.

I think the "glow" is a bit too bright. You do lose some of the detail in the architecture. And I agree on the hotspots at the bottom. Those should be easy to tone down in Ps.

Definitely a keeper because of the emotional "wow" you were able to create!

Hi Tom, I admire your imagination to create this image, it like a fairy tale. In my view it is to bright in the center, and too dark around, it maybe your intention. Nice process. Best regards   Posted: 04/15/2021 00:23:28

Dear Tom,
Greetings.
A lovely conversion of the image in to this Black & White.
The blurry effect of the green bushes is a distraction. The green bushes may be processed to be little bit more dodged & burn to match the converted flat blue background.I am more concerned about the background, as it is the only way you can
make the fairy tale palace stands out. Good work.
Stay safe & stay blessed.
Cheers.
