STELLA by John W Whitt

November 2020 - STELLA

About the Image(s)

The image is entitled "STELLA" and is a product shot. I became more interested in product photography since the advent of the Covid which has restricted my travels. The image was done with a single speedlite and PS manipulation. F=11, ISO 100, 1/160 sec.

Hi John welcome to the group looking forward to seeing your images in the future. This one beautifully presented product shot, well-balanced light brilliantly achieved with a single speed light. I like your background balance of dark to light definitely centres your eye on the bottle. On my screen the red of the label appears a bit oversaturated to my eye, I placed it in photoshop and it using a Hue saturation layer reduced the red only -24, again that's on my screen and I don't have the bottle to compare it to, although if I did have I would have drunk it by now. I also have a quandary with the bottom reflection, adding more of it I think would detract from the image and getting rid is totally I don't think is the answer either (puzzling to my eye) I will be interested to see if others comment on that as well. Well-balanced image thank you very much for posting   Posted: 11/01/2020 01:19:06

Hi, Tom. Thanks for your comments! With regard to the issue of saturation, all of the major brands have specific color palettes that they wish to be seen on their advertising so as to have consistency across various media. Stella has Stella Red, Stella Gold, Stella White and Stella Black as their color palette and each color has a specific HSL, CYMK, HSL and hexadecimal code for their product. What you see on the image is the "correct" red for Stella Red as requested by their design team. The reflection is simply a tool that I use to suggest that the bottle is on a surface of some sort so that it is not just floating in the air. I always appreciate what other people are thinking about my images and I certainly appreciate yours!   Posted: 11/01/2020 08:56:21

Hi John, welcome to Group 14. The image a very strong product shot, and I think the reflection works well to anchor the bottle. What has really caught my eye is the lighting. There are no hotspots on the bottle, and seeing that this was created with a single speedlite your control of the light and your postprocessing in PS has make a wonderful image. I look forward to seeing more of your work in future months.
Best regards,

Hi John - The lighting on your image is stunning, there is good color balance and the image has impact. I feel like the label is a little off kilter, but that is really reaching for something to critique as it is ever so slight. As you mentioned, the bottle's reflection adds some weight and grounds the bottle. The image seems to be a bit too symmetrical, but I expect that is the nature of product photography (of which I know little) What a creative pivot during Covid. Hello John,

Welcome to our DD Group 14. Looking forward to see your images in coming days. With so many negativity of Covid, we found at least a plus; that you made an amazing product photography with Stella.

I love the way you treated the light. The stands out red is also adding to the image in a significant way. The reflection works really fine for this one. Good work.
Cheers. Stay Blessed as always.

An interesting image, well done! I think this image more like fine art photography than commercial photography. The background is fascinating but overly done, making it a little distraction, so viewers focus more on it than the bottle. It is just my opinion.   Posted: 11/24/2020 10:25:38
