Glenwood Canyon Stop by Darcy Johnson

June 2020 - Glenwood Canyon Stop

About the Image(s)

This photograph was taken in late afternoon while stuck in construction traffic going through Glenwood Canyon in western Colorado. It is a beautiful canyon but one I haven't seen sitting still very often. I don't have a lot of experience shooting landscapes but I do know that most landscape photographers tend to plan their shots, use tripods and typically don't shoot out of their car window. None of which happened for this photograph. What I did do in Lightroom CC was flip the photo horizontally, cropped, shifted a few color hues, sharpened detail, and used a slight vignette. ISO 100, 24mm, f5.6 1/500 sec.

I like the image and a good choice to flip the image on the horizon. Also the light on the bottom foliage leads the eye to the cliff face. For my eye I would probably darken the sky a bit to make the Clive stand out even better. Great capture from the car   Posted: 06/01/2020 03:46:16

Darcy,
I am a big fan of your flower images, and your Icelandic Poppy in the Member's Showcase may be my favorite. A very special image. I like your Glen Canyon Stop. Having driven through the canyon, it is visually pleasing. I am glad you had the opportunity to slow down long enough to capture the canyon's beauty.
Best regards,

You have captured the rugged rocks, the foliage and the sky in good composition here. The lightening is good and brings out the texture in the stone. Fairly good details considering a hand held shot.
Yes a little darkening of the sky will increase the visual impact. Personally I think the right side of the image could do with adjustment in levels to bring out some more details.

I think that you and Tom are right about the need to darken the sky. Bringing out some details on the right is also a good suggestion. I probably didn't help matters with adding a vignette. I'll see what I can do. Thanks Arun.   Posted: 06/03/2020 10:41:10
