African Violet by Darcy Johnson

January 2020 - African Violet

About the Image(s)

I came across this close up of an African Violet when organizing photos recently. Taken 6/2012, I am not even sure of the circumstances surrounding the photo anymore. I cropped the photo tightly and sharpened - adjusting for clarity and detail. Canon ISO 400, 200mm, f5.6, 1/125 sec.

The colors complement each other. To me it appears that the center of focus is the flower on the front lower right as you look at the image. I'm not sure that I would have included so much of the greenery at the bottom of the image. It would be interesting to see what the image would have looked like with the focus was centered on the middle flower in front bringing the image down so the peddles were just above the bottom edge. The colors are great.   Posted: 01/06/2020 21:28:52

Thanks for giving me some ideas to play with. I appreciate your input Bill.   Posted: 01/07/2020 23:07:00

I like the complementing colors of the flowers and the leaves and the softness captured in the flower petals. As Bill writes the image may do better with the center of focus to the flower in the center. The
Personally to me the crop appears to be too abrupt on the top.   Posted: 01/13/2020 16:11:04

Thanks for your input Arun. I'll look at the original crop and see what I can do.   Posted: 01/13/2020 16:52:33

The colors in this image work well together. As mentioned, the center of focus seems to be in the right lower flower. If you want to play with this image a bit, you may want to crop in from the left side, create a square, and put the flower that is in focus the rule of thirds point. Just a thought.   Posted: 01/13/2020 20:42:42

Good idea - I think that would work. Thanks.   Posted: 01/13/2020 21:54:18

A tight composition with eye soothing colors to balance one another. Interesting perception though. The cropping would surely give a different look, if more space could be left on the top. My personal opinion only. Nice work Darcy.   Posted: 01/30/2020 15:23:21
