Searing the Tomahawk by Paul Swepston

October 2018 - Searing the Tomahawk

About the Image(s)

Camera: hand held, f 3.0, 1/30 sec, 32 mm focal length, ISO 500. In Lightroom I used the dehaze feature to make the smoke pop out a bit more. I used Color Efex Pro 4 to enhance the saturation as well as add a small amount of vignetting.

Wow, Paul, this is great! Love the smoke, color, and placement of the meat. Should be an ad for a market or restaurant.   Posted: 10/14/2018 13:29:24

I think the swirling reflection off the stainless steel back splash is interesting and I'm not sure why I got so many swirling patterns.   Posted: 10/14/2018 14:16:12

Hi Paul, This is a great mouth watering image, it shows action with the smoke and the blue flame and the colour reflection on the back make the image,
I think cropping the burner from the front would enable the meat to be the focus,( may I ask what the meat is,doesnt resemble anything that we have here ? )   Posted: 10/16/2018 04:48:00

It is (was) a Wagyu tomahawk steak. Essentially a ribeye steak with the bone still attached. It was a present from a nephew and at 2.5 lbs, required sharing with my wife.

In terms of cropping, would you just crop the bottom and go with a non-standard image size?   Posted: 10/16/2018 09:56:40

I cropped to a 2:3 ratio, this has put the steak on the bottom third line and maintains the wonderful coloured background   Posted: 10/17/2018 04:00:00

that helps - thanks   Posted: 10/17/2018 09:43:55

Your ability to capture the sizzling was great. I could almost hear it! the background is wonderful - color and blur lines. Using the dehaze feature was a great idea to get the steam to become prominent.

I think a little crop off the bottom could help a little. Also, possible darken the silver platter on the rights side could help as my eye kept going there as it was lighter and on the edge.   Posted: 10/24/2018 21:18:47

A great image Paul. I agree with Wendy's crop, to lose a little of the cooker from the bottom. It also helps to emphasise the steam and patterns above. The colour looks good. Almost making the steak good enough to eat!   Posted: 10/25/2018 05:31:09
