Good Smells - Orchid by Walter Ross

January 2021 - Good Smells - Orchid

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken while visiting a local nursery filled with lots of fragrant flowers. I was drawn to this orchid as it was backlit and quite vivid. I also found the 'little smiling creature' in the middle quite photogenic. I used the D750 f7.1 1/200 ISO 200 with a 20-200 zoom. Post included a small crop and then adding the radial blur filter to downplay a very busy background.

Excellent shot. Orchids are beautiful - and they do smell good. The backlighting brings out the lovely pattern on the petals. The radial blur filter looks like lavender sunbeams. I love it! Do all orchids have that "little smiling creature"? Thanks for showing me something I never noticed before.   Posted: 01/13/2021 14:48:08

I was thinking "food" until I saw your flower...great idea! I like your idea to blur out distracting backgrounds with the zoom blur. Sometimes I Gaussian blur such zooming streaks, starting from the flower and decreasing the Gaussian blur as it goes to the picture's edge. This helps the background look more natural.   Posted: 01/13/2021 17:51:56

I really like the overall photo. My eye was immediately drawn to the center of the orchid. I felt the background blur really complicated the flower. Has a great visual overall.   Posted: 01/16/2021 00:15:07
