May 2020 - Sign of Spring

About the Image(s)

Early spring, a few years ago, we took the Blue Ridge Parkway to get to a workshop in the Smoky Mountains. If you have ever driven there, you know that view changes around every bend. One is tempted to stop every half mile to take pictures. Most trees were still bare, but the road was lined with small trees a-riot with bright magenta blossoms. We had never seen such a thing. We learned that these trees were redbuds. The weather and the skies were perfect that day.

Canon 5D Mark II with a Tamron zoom lens. f/16, 1/250 sec., ISO 800. Processed in Photoshop using Topaz Basic to set the white point, AI Clear for focus, HSL color tuning to emphasize the magenta and purple, and lastly a levels adjustment layer.

Certainly signs of spring with the gorgeous pink blossoms against the starkness of the tree. The blue sky also adds colour and acts as a good backdrop for the tree. For me i would have cropped the foreground slightly so to give more focus to the blossoms and the tree. Must have been a beautiful drive at that time of year!   Posted: 05/13/2020 11:39:26

I love the way the pink blossoms signifying spring contrast so dramatically with the dark, naked, leafless tree branches. Yes, I agree that there's a great view around every bend on the Blue Ridge Parkway! The clear blue sky sets off the scene. The thing I find quite distracting from the main subjects is the brightness of the lower left foreground area. Here's my edited version where I darkened that area to allow the eye to go directly to the blossoms and interesting almost silhouetted tree.   Posted: 05/19/2020 15:58:47

Everything works here. I love the soft delicate blossoms on the spring bushes. It is nice that the brightes part of the sky is at the horizon since is helps center the eye on the pink color. Nicely done.!   Posted: 05/19/2020 16:51:58
