A Path by Connie Reinhart

March 2020 - A Path

About the Image(s)

This was taken several years ago on a visit to Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. There was a path leading to a quiet pond, and these two girls were trying to fish. It looks as if they are having trouble with a tangled line. This was processed soon after we got home. This was shot at f/6.3, 1/100 sec at ISO 400. I would guess the usual levels, color adjustment, sharpening with high pass filter, and probably cropping was done to the original. I cloned out a bright spot that looked like a wad of paper and a bright jacket across the pond. Sturbridge Village often has school/scout groups visiting, and vintage costumes are available for those who want to dress up. It adds to the experience of plain old visitors like us. If you live near here, it is a marvelous place for photography.

The blues and the greens are beautiful and attract my eyes to the girls. The path looks very interesting. Wish I could see more of it. Of course, at the time you took the photo, you were taking a picture of the girls. A way to emphasize the path more for this assignment would be to crop off the building at the top. Although it would also cut off the top of the fishing pole, that seems okay to me.   Posted: 03/03/2020 21:11:44

I actually debated that crop, but decided to keep the fishing pole. I did use the healing brush to remove some tourists in bright clothes on the far shore.   Posted: 03/08/2020 19:47:35

Do you mean the vintage costumes are available to anyone dressing up or or just groups like girl scouts or school ?
At first, I thought it might just be how they dressed there (sort of like Amish). I really felt the costumes really enhanced they were wearing did make the eye focus on them. They do look deep in thought with that pole. I agree with Carole on maybe cropping out the house, but at least it is dark and somewhat covered by overgrowth.

We saw many people in period costumes and finally asked about this. The regular volunteers wear costumes, but costumes are also available for school groups. The youngsters wander the grounds freely and really add to the authenticity of the village.   Posted: 03/22/2020 17:06:04

I would love to know what the 2 girls are saying! I like how you have framed the girls with the bushes in front and the soft reflections of the water enhances the lighting. The girls outfits add to the story and blend in nicely with the scene.   Posted: 03/17/2020 13:10:19

We saw the little path as we were walking the main road. We didn't see the girls until we rounded a curve. The bushes and the girls had arranged themselves.   Posted: 03/22/2020 17:07:40

I would have debated about the crop too. I like the image as presented. I think the bright white cap on the girl holds the eye down far enough to bring the path into view. A lovely image.   Posted: 03/28/2020 10:22:30
