M is for Morning Mist by Connie Reinhart

October 2018 - M is for Morning Mist

About the Image(s)

This was taken in 2005 with one of our first digital cameras, an EOS Rebel with a whopping big 180 dpi. Our church Thrift Shop shared space at that time with the Quilters. One day an older quilter rushed in a breathlessly, telling me to get my camera and go the Bowmanstown bridge. β€œIt's beautiful!!” So off I flew to the next town to hang over the railing of the bridge and catch this image. It was a cold morning (you can see the ice scum developing on the river). The fog had lifted somewhat but left the trees iced with frozen mist, catching the sun very nicely. I printed a copy for my friend, telling it was really her picture, because she saw it first. Shot at f/16, ISO 100, at 1/80 sec. Did some sharpening and levels adjustment in PhotoShop. The β€œM” Morning Mist.

When I clicked on your image, the larger version of it really emphasized the details. Must have been lovely to see the winter icy scene in person. Pretty reflection, too. Nice composition. I'll bet the print was unique.   Posted: 10/08/2018 15:21:32

My quilting friend was thrilled to get a framed copy. Even though the camera was a point & shoot with single digit megapixels (not bad for back then, it looked fine printed as an 11x14.   Posted: 10/24/2018 12:35:06

It was very cold with an icy wind blowing over the bridge. With no tripod, the camera was rested on the railing, but the whole bridge vibrated when a car crossed over it.   Posted: 10/24/2018 12:36:42

This is a very nice image. Carol is right, the larger image really brings out he detail. It has a lot of color to it. I often have trouble with outdoor images, so these types are great examples. Do you remember what lens you used ? Looks like something telescopic from the depth of field.   Posted: 10/13/2018 05:52:34

The Rebel had a built-in zoom, not interchangeable lenses. This shot was zoomed slightly, because another version shows more of the background. I took many versions before the cold got too much.   Posted: 10/24/2018 12:39:15

The richness of detail from the sharpening looks great in this shot. I tried changing it to monochrome as a test, but I prefer the delicate shades of color in your original.   Posted: 10/17/2018 21:29:59

Thank you, Stephen. This image does lend itself well to B&W. We started our photographic adventures with our own darkroom and shot B&W exclusively.   Posted: 10/24/2018 12:43:09

I remember going thru mornings of image for the theme.
I like Stephens entry in black and white.   Posted: 10/19/2018 16:52:45

My grandson suggested doing something with a marble, but I was too busy to work on that. Then I remembered this picture.   Posted: 10/24/2018 12:41:43
