January 2018 - Weather

About the Image(s)

This is a cell phone picture; therefore only composition is my choice. Metadata says it was f/2.4, 1/60 sec at ISO 64. I opened it in camera raw and adjusted clarity, exposure increased, whites and highlights brightened, black and shadows deepened.

In PhotoShop I added a high pass filter with a blend mode of overlay. The story is more interesting than the metadata. We had errands to run in the ‘city’, about 25 miles away. Bad weather was predicted, but we left anyway. Within 10 minutes a wintry mix started, but we kept going. The mix turned to freezing rain, then sleet, then slushy snow. Our last stop was the local grocery store for the requisite bread and milk. That’s when I saw the front of our car and took the picture. People asked if we were scared of driving under such conditions. We answered, “No way “ our car has dragon’s teeth!”

I really like this photo! Not only for the textures that are in it but for the extra creativity that you included when you observed and shot the photo. They really do look like "dragon's teeth". Very interesting composition and it focuses the viewer's eyes more towards the ice by darkening the shadows.

I'm torn whether a closer crop should be applied from above because I'm not sure whether the top grill is distracting enough or not however you might consider clone stamping out the big ice chunk. It might take a little bit of time but I feel it would be well worth it in the end.

Really amazing eye to have caught this! This is similar to the "I SEE FACES" challenge that people like to do every now and then where you take photos of "faces" that you see in ordinary objects! Great fun!   Posted: 01/05/2018 15:12:14

Yes, a closer crop would indeed make the icicles look more like teeth. But I left it in because the grill is covered with thick ice. One would think that the heat of the engine would have prevented that. More evidence of how foolish we were to venture out.   Posted: 01/06/2018 20:30:40

Great image showing what the weather will do to water.
The image taken with a cellphone will give you
showing the water as teeth.   Posted: 01/11/2018 15:31:13

This is my favorite for the month. The only thing I might change is a small crop on the bottom. Exposure and sharpness is perfect.

It's a great pic for the subject matter. I think I might have considered cropping it more and doing it a focus directly on the icicles. The purple of the vehicle and the clear icicles brings out a lot of the colors.

Thank you all for your comments. Here's a new version taking your advice. It is cropped to just the "mouth" area. I couldn't clone that ice chunk away without being obvious, so I used NIK Viveza to darken it. Then, because I can't resist having a little fun, I added a smoke plume (couldn't find flames that would work).   Posted: 01/16/2018 09:55:11

I really like this photo Connie! I like the smoke effect because it kind of looks like breath on a cold winter day coming out of the car's mouth. Really nice focus on the composition! Good creativity! It's always good to have fun with the post-processing!   Posted: 01/17/2018 20:10:40

What a capture - well done. I like the dragon teeth imagination! ;-) The second try I like even more, because the focus is more on the theeth. And the added dragon breath is wonderful creative!

Oh, yes, this is what I grew up with all winter in Michigan. Now in Kansas which is farther south, I see this only once every year or so. I especially like the big hunk of dirty icy snow, because that is so very realistic in this kind of weather. And, of course, the all dragon teeth are special! I'd say this is a great weather shot with all the aspects of trying to drive!   Posted: 01/29/2018 12:30:37
