About the Image(s)

While preparing a Zoom presentation for a local camera club on Polar Bears from a wonderful 2014 trip to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, I thought that they would be a great B&W subject for this month. These were wonderful subjects and quite fun to study and photograph as they waited for the sea ice to form so they could get their first real meal in 5 months.

This greeting between two Polar Bears was captured from a Tundra Buggy hand held at 1/640 sec, f/11 at ISO 400 with a Canon 7D Mk2 and Canon 100-400 lens at 300mm. Processed in Lightroom to balance exposure and white balance, sharpened, converted to B&W, then removed noise with DeNoise AI and cropped.

I had to reduce the exposure on the left bear quite a bit to keep the detail from being blown out and somewhat balanced exposure with the right bear.

Should I have gone with more contrast in the image overall?

Thanks, Allen. We enjoy traveling and had to delay a couple of trips due to the pandemic. Where do you want photos from next month?

This is great, Jim. No suggestions. I look forward to more exotic locales in the coming months.   Posted: 08/09/2020 18:08:12
