About the Image(s)

Our camera club theme for this month is "Flowers and Weeds". A local horse trail on a south facing slope is an accessible locale for well fertilized spring growth. A passing butterfly pausing briefly to sample an opening flower pulled my camera away from a carefully composed darker scene to grab this shot. Overexposed, but I like the "Sun is out again!" mood of the original. Sampling Lightroom's Adobe profiles I chose the high key BW07, shown in Original 2. Then I cropped to move the subject from the center and reduce dead space at the top, and added a NIK border. Usually I look for bright subjects on dark backgrounds. Exploring different territory I left in some blown highlights. Do they feel right or should I tone them down?

Nicely framed shot, Allen. I like the way you lined up the butterfly between the uprights. I really like your crop, though I'm not as fond of the border. The only suggestion I have is to open up the shadows a bit on the body of the butterfly to allow for a bit more detail. I've done that with my version, though I'm sure you'd have more success with the original image.   Posted: 05/11/2020 13:04:57

I like the image, the dark subject and the high key background. My only suggestion is to darken the flower petals in the bottom right of the photo as they are much brighter the rest of the background.   Posted: 05/13/2020 09:25:45

Overall very nice image. I agree with Jim about darkening the flower in the lower right.   Posted: 05/18/2020 10:57:08

Well I think that you nailed the brief perfectly Allen! Beautiful image with lovely tones. I am going to agree with the bit too bright flower but all in all such a pretty and calming image. Nice work as that harsh sunlight is rarely kind but you handled it well. Great job :)   Posted: 05/23/2020 21:27:34

I like the variety of the high key presentation. Great composition with the background and off center subject. I agree with the dodging of the butterfly to see more detail. While I noticed the bright flower, I didn't consider it that much of a distraction, in a way I like the contrast with the dark butterfly. A fun image.
