About the Image(s)

This picture was taken a couple of years ago at Stanley Lake in the Sawtooth mountains of Idaho. I used my Canon 7D II, 24 - 100mm lens, at ISO 100, f/10. This was taken early in the morning and there was a fire in the area that caused a hazy sky. I edited in Adobe Lightroom and Silver Effects Pro.

Good job, Lisa. I like your mono version better than the original color image as it brings out more details in the mountains.
I investigated increasing clarity and dehaze to improve the details in the mountains and the clouds more, but this might may change your artistic intent.   Posted: 09/03/2019 21:24:01

Such a lovely tranquil and serene landscape Lisa! I do prefer the wider crop in your original. I love the inclusion of the caravan as it gives me the thought of people enjoying camping here and I wish that I was one of them :) The taller pine on the far right gives me a place to rest with my eye before I travel back across the shoreline. I do like Jims edit and I would like to see it applied to your original. The detail in the rugged mountains is fabulous! Well done :)   Posted: 09/06/2019 23:51:16

The background low haze helps the dark conifers stand out. Jim's added contrast at the top of the frame emphasizes the jagged skyline that gave these mountains the name "Sawtooth". The right edge feel right, but the single frame leaves me wanting to see more on the left side; did you consider taking a second overlapping shot to create a panorama?   Posted: 09/07/2019 17:02:41

I like the mono image and Jim Bodkin's version. But, I wanted to add more emphasis on the mountains so I cropped out much of the water's reflections and darkened the sky and mountains.   Posted: 09/10/2019 14:11:39

Thanks for the suggestion Jim. I had not thought to crop it that way, but I like it.   Posted: 09/15/2019 23:03:37

While the color version is okay, the mono version really works so much better. As others have indicated, the mountains in the back need a bit more something - probably contrast. As it stands, the reflection has more contrast than the mountains do and that feels odd. The other minor distraction (minors can be quite distracting) is the log in the water in the lower right. Here's my take on it:   Posted: 09/10/2019 18:13:10

Thanks Tom, I had thought about removing the logs, but decided to leave it more as I saw it. I do agree that it is a stronger image without.   Posted: 09/15/2019 23:04:50
