About the Image(s)

Our elevation in the Sierra foothills is usually below the snow line, but a week ago we woke up to a clean blanket of white on the ground, white frosting on the dark limbs of the oak trees, and flakes still coming down, all illuminated by beautiful soft light.

Shot with Canon 6D, Tamron 24-70mm lens at 35mm, f/8, 1/125 s, iso 1600. Original processed in Lightroom with Adobe Mono profile and small tonal and clarity adjustments. For the final a blue tint was added by raising the midpoint of the blue channel tone curve to 55%. Does this tint add or detract for this scene?

Beautiful photo of the snow. I really like how the tree frames the picture and the open area leads you in to the image. There is lots of texture and shapes to keep your interest. Nice shot.   Posted: 03/15/2019 22:59:20

Wowsers!! Lucky lucky you to see all of this from the comfort of your own home!
Either or on the tint. The blue conveys the cold but the original mono has a little more depth and maybe even a softness to it. Both are great but, after placing the two images side by side the original mono has my vote. Only by a whisker and a teeny tiny whisker at that. My only suggestions would be to possible clone out the power lines - or are they your ski lift lines ;).
Absolutely awesome image and thanks for sharing it.   Posted: 03/19/2019 21:47:25

Thanks for your input. I see those phone lines every day so my brain has learned to ignore them, like familiar background noise, and I didn't notice them in this photo. Easy to remove when I decide on my final print.   Posted: 03/19/2019 23:40:18

Just goes to show that I really spent some time soaking in the wondrous atmosphere that your image portrays. We are at the backend of the hottest and driest summer that Australia has ever experienced, so to lose myself in your wonderfull image was a pleasure!   Posted: 03/23/2019 18:31:21

Gorgeous, Allen! The arch of the one tree limb, curving into the tree on the left, provides a lovely natural framing for the snow scene.

I didn't notice the wires until Sharron tipped us off, so they are not really a distracting element they could be in a version of the scene without snow.

For me, the blue works better for a winter scene. It cools the scene down just a titch more, thus adding the "feel" of winter. The standard mono, without more white, has a dirtier feel.   Posted: 03/23/2019 11:59:46

I like the photo a lot. The arch is a wonderful part of the composition. I have just a slight preference for the blue tint and the feeling of coldness it gives. I have no suggestions.   Posted: 03/26/2019 15:21:00

Nicely framed scene within a scene as your eye is drawn into the image, Allen. The details and contrast are perfect and the exposure correct. I didn't even see the power lines on my laptop. I think I would go with the blue to add an original touch to the image.
